Helix Classic X550 Maduro
Decent beginner cigar for the money

Oliva Serie G Maduro Grand Maduro-Robosto Maduro
Excellent stick for the money whether or not you're a beginner

Royal Jamaica Gold Robusto Natural
Use it to prop up the short leg of your dining room table or something, just don't smoke it

Sant Luis Rey Reserva Especial Titan Maduro
Another very decent stick for the money

Sancho Panza Double Maduro Quixote Oscuro
Ditto

Bahia Maduro
Can be good, but it's inconsistent

Bolivar New 2005 Robusto
OK...rich, strong but not very dimensional for the bread

Puros INdios Maduro
Good quality but not to my taste

Padilla Maduro Robusto Maduro
OK but the Habano is the one to try. As you progress, don't miss the Miami-made 8&11 and 1932 -- both over $10 and well worth the money.

These are all OK, and the Padilla and Oliva are much better than OK, but try some of these brands -- you might find that spending an extra buck or two gets you 100% more cigar in terms of flavor and complexity:

Fuente Cuban Belicoso (about $5)
Any Fuente Don Carlos (about $7-$11)
Oliva Master Blends 3 (around $10 - $12)
Tatuaje red label (around $8)
Don Pepin Garcia blue label or Series JJ (about $8)
Any La Flor Dominicana
Any Padron
Any Camacho
Any Alec Bradley Trilogy
Any Carlos Torano

Smoke less, smoke better. The earlier you learn it, the happier you wil be.

Why are you asking our opinion AFTER you bought the cigars? If I say some are crap, will you send them back.

Kind of like shoot first and ask questions later.

I will not send them back I will give them to a person who normally doesnt smoke them muhahahah. But to answer your question I was asking opinions of the smokes I had just picked up. Opinions are just that and we all know the saying that goes with that. I just wanted to know if any one else tried them and what their personal smoking experience were with these smokes if any. Will the yays or nays sway me either way probably not. Just having conversation.

I enjoy the Helix's. Very mild and cost less than your names as AF, padron, ect. Many guys around here dont like Helix because, well, its Helix. Im not trying to say Helix is the "hip" thing, but give it a try and see for yourself, thats 90% of this game.

People always ask if this cigar is good or that cigar... Let me ask you this, why do people in this world not like Onions, and others cant even bear to smell them? Its your personal taste, so dont dismiss it without tasting. Just because it has a purple band or because it hasnt been around as long as some of the older guys doesnt make it not worth trying.
Just my 2 cents

You are so right when it comes down to it its what ever the individual is into. For instance I thought the Joya de Nicaragua I had the other day was crap. So far my favorite smoke is the La Gloria Cubana Series R Maduro Rothschild.

We're not talking about personal taste here. It's not as simple as whether or not you like onions...if it were, the question would be whether or not you like tobacco. What we're talking about when we say a cigar is crap or not is (a) the quality of the tobacco, (b) the quality of construction, (c) consistency, (d) the complexity and balance of the blend and (e)the overall presentation. Naturally there's an element of personal taste there but it's not nearly as subjective as some might make it out to be. Junk is junk. That's not to say you can't smoke a crap cigar and still like it, even knowing it's crap. But to use another analogy, if you can't feel the difference between a Honda Accord and a BMW M5, or you prefer the Honda, then you probably can't call yourself a car enthusiast.

Not trying to stir the pot or anything, but, I have to repectfully disagree with Extensincord on this one.

People have preferences for different things. I will use the example that gets LOTL most upset, and that is Acids. I have smoked 4-5 of them in my life. I have a friend who smokes them regularly. Quality, construction, consistancy, complexity, style all top notch. I personally think that they are crap. Not looking for a tremendous blast of 160 herbs and botatanicals. Eek I rate them a 2 on a 1-10 scale. (I have to give them something for the aforementioned qualities.)
IMHO it is how YOU enjoy and like it. YOUR flavor preferences and the attributes that YOU look for and enjoy. That is not to say that there is no crap, just that it is perspective.

I would like to amend csmithnj's ratings a bit:
St. Luis Rey - Good
Sancho Panza - Good
Bahia - OK

Just my opinion....

Then why join this forum at all? Imagine joining a foodie forum and trying to make a case for why a 99-cent BK hamburger is better than Kobe beef, or that the difference between Frexinet and '85 Krug is irrelevant because all that matters is your personal preference. Listen, smoke, drink and eat what you like but why bother participating in a forum like this if you believe the differences between cigars are 90% subjective? That's simply not the case.

I guess then I would ask you why you would join the forum? If it was so iron clad as to what is good and what is crap then why not start a webpage with a list of what they are. You can list what is good and what is crap so everyone can see. You could update it fom time to time to allow for changes and everyone could come and post "Ditto" in the forum. Myself, I would not join a forum like that. Sounds like too much self-congratulatory back slapping boredom to me.

I choose to join a forum that I could learn what other peoples views and perspectives were. I enjoy hearing about what other people enjoy and their "take" on it. Someones priceless treasure is another's dog rocket.

People like different things. It is interesting.

As for the food analogy...I have had some of the best food in little low country shacks, fish camps, and other unassuming spots.

Just my opinion.

MY POINT EXACTLY!!!

Good cigars are where you find them, but most of what's great these days isn't the mass-produced stuff from giant conglomerates like General or Altadis. Macanudo, Helix, Royal Jamaica...they taste like tobacco and they're consistent. Just like Burger King tastes like beef (sorta) and you always get the same sandwich wherever you are. But once you get off the beaten path into smaller boutique brands, that's where the really good stuff is. Sometimes it's $5, sometimes it's $15, but it's unique and special and not bland and produced in the gazllions. See, we're not that far apart.

If you bought them, smoke them, and then decide for yourself. Especially if you're a beginner. That way you can get a taste for what you like about a particular cigar and/or type of tobacco. Ie. nicaraguan, dominican, blended, etc.

If you end up liking any of them, then good for you. If not, trade out with someone else who may not have tried the cigars you have.

Go colts!
