I usualy like to smoke ring gages in the 50+ range. Robustos, toros, and the like. I also prefer medium to full. This morning after breafeast I wanted something different so I headed to a local B&M. I picked up a couple Dunhill Canary Island Panatelas. Made myself some cafe Bustello on the lighter side than usual and lit the Dunhill. I must say this was a fantastic smoke. The draw was perfect. Lots of smoke for such a thin ring. It was mild but plenty flavorfull. Creamy and nutty. The coffee, since I made it light but drank it black, did not over power the mild flavor. Nor did the cigar take away from the coffee. The coffee brought out the walnutty flavor of the smoke and the smoke brought out the rich roasted beans of the coffee. All in all a perfect morning smoke that gave me 45 minutes of smoking pleasure. Now the panatela has a place in my cigar portfolio.
Dunhill Canary Islands were discontinued years ago. What you smoked was probably very well aged.
At one time, there were three handmade lines under the Dunhill name: Dominican, Honduran and Canary. Torano handles distribution for the new Dunhill Signed Range which is also made by them for British American Tobacco. The old Dominican Dunhill (blue band), last I heard, was being made by Altadis and distributed by Cigars by Santa Clara, the distribution arm of JR Cigars, which is now owned mostly by Altadis.
So anyway, if you liked them, buy what you can while you can.
This is the same place I've been getting the Henry Clay with all the bloom on it. It is more of a pipe shop then anything but nice prices on the cigars make me go back. I'm going to ask him the age on the cigars and if he has a few more left. Thanks Extensioncord for the info.
