Got a preview of the new Montecristo Classic, which it seems is set to replace the brown-banded standard Montes. Mid-brown CT shade wrapper, a bit darker than the old version, and a new maroon band with raised lettering. A much classier appearance. The toro format I smoked started off mild but became richer as I smoked it, with a nice woody, medium-bodied flavor. My tobacconist told me that it will be slightly cheaper than the Montes on shelves now. Anyone else had a chance to try this post-RTDA?
I won't be trying it. My only NC Montecristo experience was two DCs that had all the flavor and oompfh of cardboard (with a hint of vanilla ). For my cash, there are just other smokes out there I'd much rather try.

Sorry, but the only NC Monte's I've ever smoked turned into soggy messes...can't stand a cigar that turns soft and soggy as I smoke it..just a waste of money and time

The new series arrived at my store, I'll try some more and post a review to let everyone know whether the production cigars live up to the RTDA samples.
Altadis brought out this new Motecristo line for us B&M guys. These will only be available at your local tobacconist. I haven't had one yet (of the 100+ cigars I brought back from New Orleans I didn't get one of these for some reason).

Smoked a double corona size and two robustos this weekend. Nice, easy medium bodied cigar with a gorgeous near-Colorado wrapper but has a very sweet component that got tiring after awhile. I'll be sticking with Fonseca, La Flor, Romeo Reserva Real and Monte White when I'm in the mood for a mild cigar.

Because they're apples and oranges. That's like saying to someone drinking water, why not drink vodka, they're both clear.
The new Altadis Montes are new so I figured I'd give them a try as a good mild smoke for when I'm on an empty stomach. If I want a Havana Monte I go for a Monte #4 or Edmundo. I don't think anyone expects that a Cuban namesake cigar can (or even attempts to) duplicate the same flavor as their Cuban counterparts, though La Gloria Cubana does get in the ballpark.

I'm not sure where you shop or if your in the US but the Habanas are waaaay more expensive than the non's. If you know of a deal, please let us in on the secret.

I pay about $9 a stick for Cuban Monte Edmundos, $10 a stick for No. 2s and $6 a stick for No. 4s. That's a little less than Altadis' non-Cuban Montecristos. There's no secret; those are the prevailing prices from a number of good, reliable overseas dealers that ship to North America.
