Meanwhile, I started reading up on Opus X on various boards, and based on others' comments decided to give the sticks a try after six months.
What a difference. It would be hard to overstate how much better these were after some quality time alone.
Still, even at normal retail these are more expensive than many CCs, and for that reason while I will always have a dozen or so around, I don't find them to be a very good value. At $40 a stick they are ridiculous unless you just are hooked on their taste. Try a Partagas Lusitanias or Bolivar Belicosos Finos if you can get them.
Wait until you have had one that is say 5 or 10 years old.
Virtually any premium will improve with age, it's just that with Opus this seems to be a prerequisite. I am a big VSG fan, and while these are excellent right out of the box because they are not released for several months after rolling, they get even better as they age in your own humi.
Basically, if you get a premium smoke and are disappointed, toss the rest into your humi (or a coolerdor) for a few months, then give them another try. It all depends on what your tastes are; some people really like a young taste, some don't. The fun is in finding what you like.

ok, I'm also one of those idiots who purchased one Opux X for 40 bucks. On top of that it was back orderd. It sits on my top shelf just to tease my friends. I may not ever smoke it. Who cares...I have no problem smoking Graycliffs A fine top shelf cigar at a far better price..
Only the DC size in Opus runs me over $14. They range from $10-$15 here. For $40, it should come with a complimentary jar of vaseline.
I will disagree on the VSG being better with age. I much prefer them straight out of the box. I like the edge they have that they lose when aged. Everything else I age though, just not VSG's.
