I wrote a few times how crummy my Alt JR's were, and possibly the worst cigars I've tasted. I need to witdrawl that statement. I purchased some JR's Alt Punch and alt Cuban Montes, and like a noob, lit one up almost immediatly after they arrived. They were harsh and burned very poorly. I let them sit about a week or two and tried another, and it was still not a good smoke. I have ignored these smokes now for about three or four months, and just lit one up. While still not a stellar smoke, these cigars have improved greatly, and I can say with confidence they are not all that bad. ADVICE to ALL! If you buy the JR's bundles, DON"T EXPECT TO SMOKE THEM RIGHT AWAY! You definatly need to let them stabilize in your humidor for a few month at least! They are a MUCH better cigar. Sorry JR, I was too harsh, and I humbly apologize!
PS. Can JR do something about the band glue on the wrapper?

I bought a bundle when I first started to smoke cigars. I can't even remember which one, but it wasn't that bad. But I did buy a box of La Primadora Select then as well, and I'll never forgive Lew for selling those to me. LOL....
I found a hemmingway maduro alt. that had been in my humidor for about a year and a half, that was absolutely outstanding. The clerk at the burlington jrs. had found a bundle of punch alts that were from 2001 and were covered in plume and were very, very nice...

I have a bundle of Cuban alternatives (cohiba robusto) and they have about a year of age on them, and they taste like a completely different cigar than when i first purchased them. They are not the best smokes, but like previously said, they definately arent dog rockets anymore.

Stoge, I agree about the overhumidification from JRs. When I had my desktop, I'd buy 10-15 cigars and putting them in the humi would spike the entire RH level!
I was thinking you could save yourself the trouble of maintaining a humidifier by just buying a JR 5-pack ever couple of weeks to keep your entire humi nice and moist.

Shorthair always gives me hell about smoking the JR Alts, but in my experience, they're better than you'd expect for less than a buck each, and after a few months to a year, they really come into their own.
That said, don't expect miracles, but I highly recommend them as a beginner cigar. I smoked a JR to Monte #2 last week...woody, earthy flavors, perfect burn and draw, and I enjoyed it very much.
On the other hand, if you only have time to enjoy one or two cigars a week, don't waste your time...life's too short.
Hey man if they're good to you smoke on. Just don't ask me to join you for a smoke. Of course if you did have me by for a smoke I would bring you a treat as that is the expectation whenever I show up anywhere anymore. My wife thinks I'm giving away the store but I feel like Santa Claus.

Of course, "smoke less but smoke better" is a pretty good piece of advice, too. With all the great cigars out there and prices relatively stable (except at Habanos SA), it makes me wonder why people still bother with bundles. Me, I just can't help myself.

Because for about $40 you can have 25 hand rolled torps with beautiful, brown corojo wrappers from our friends at Oliva.
Peace.

El Pres, I couldn't have said it better myself. Just got my first bundle of them this week (I believe it was at your recommendation). Can't beat them for an "everyday smoke".

I just picked up a bundle at the local. $10 higher than on-line, but wtf. He's gotta eat too.
Peace.

When you look in the JR Catalog and see the alts they are just the same size as similar cigars. They are not anything near the same blend and do not try to be.
If you want a robusto that doesn't cost a fortune but tastes great you will have to spend a few dollars more but you can get them.
If you must smoke a special size cigar, look around. Try samplers from places like Famous-Smoke, or Cigar-Bid.
The JR Alts are not everybodys cup of tea, but they are a decent smoke for the novice smoker.
If you want more flavor or complexity you are going to have to move up in the world.
