I have been smoking cigars for some time, but as of recently I have really started enjoying them and focusing more on the cigar itself than just the "hang out and smoke a cigar" atmosphere. I've never smoked the "top end" cigars that I see alot of on here, to be honest, I aint got that money...lol

Anyways, I just got married and now have a bit of money to hopefully get a bigger humidor and hopefully get a few nice smokes to enjoy. I have been buying some "specials" online when they are cheap so my main smokes lately have been from Pepin/Gurkha centurians/Monte media noche's and some other cheaper cigars. I'm looking to try something a little more out there that I might buy without good advise from here, I wanna get an opus X to try, I had one on my wedding night but gave it to my father in law (mistake!..lol)

Help me get outside of the norm, looking for something that is either a really good sleeper, or something that is worth the price tag. I cant buy locally as the shops around here suck, so online suggestions are much welcome.

Thanks,
James

I'm sure you've heard the name Rocky Patel on this forum. In my opinion the Vintage line (especially the 1992) is worth every penny. A churchill will run you around $8.00 a stick. It's a medium body, great construction and creamy.

My advice is to stay away from Gurkha and General Cigar. I think their smokes are uninspired and overpriced.

As for more high end smokes that are worth the price, Padrons are a certain enjoyment. The 1964 series will cost you about 10 bucks a stick if you buy a box. www.famous-smoke.com has them, but you can ony buy one box.

Ashton Virgin Sun Growns are extremely popular and definitely worth the dough.

For a more everyday box, the Padron thousand series cigars, and La flor dominicanas are good, strong cigars.

I suggest you find one of the websites that offer singles and just try things out. Try different sizes and wrappers.
Personally I like Romeo y Julieta, Montecristo, Perdomo Lot 23, Rocky Patel American Market and 1999, Oliveros XL, and Helix maduro.

I went like you from the specials and cheapies to Rocky Patel connecticut, anything patron,Perdomo, Ghurka, Puros Indios, etc. In my opinion someone in the stage of smoking that you are, Cigars International offers a lot of good specials in that 4-5 dollar range to try. Another reccomendation would be to go to CI's sit and buy several singles of the aforementioned when you find one you like buy a box. then next week do the same with 5 or 6 different ones when you find ones you like take note of it and either buy a box or wait for a special and buy then. It takes a while but eventually you will start to understaand what you like and can take advantage of the deals and specials most online sources have from time to time. I usually dont buy a special just because it is cheap I only purchase when I have tried one in the past and know I like. This helps avoid accumulating a bunch of cheap cigars that I dont like. It takes patience but can be done on a budget.

Good luck
