fuente fuente Opus X What do you guys think of this cigar? I just bought on for my brother and I to smoke on his graduation night and I just was curious to hear other peoples opinions of it. I have only heard good things about it up to now.
Hey JR to quote a c.a. taster.."lots of raw power here"a very complex Dom.puro, tell bro congrats. My 17 y.o.is graduating in a couple of weeks too,but no cigars yet.

Do you think that this would be a cigar that would be enjoyed by someone who does not smoke cigars often? I just don't want him to light it up and hate it. Otherwise I bought a dominican cohiba that I was thinking about giving him instead.
there were no more double coronas left, so I bought him a smaller one, I believe it is something like 5 by 48ish. It cost about $12. I also bought one for myself and that one was like 5 by 50ish. It cost me $14. Was that an alright price or was I ripped off? I don't feel like I spent too much, concidering it's a big deal for him, but I don't know how it compares.
Damn JR burning the midnight oil eh? The Opus is pretty strong! If I were you I would keep it for myself and get bro something a bit milder. You dont want to scare him away from the cigar scene, maybe a Fuente 858..great aroma-not too strong,4 year aged leaf and very tasty.

alright, I'll have to look into some other options then. I have some other goodies in my humidor, so I'll peak in there and see if there are some better options. I know I have some milder ones. Thank again guys
Just one thing more. If this is his first smoke don't allow him to finish the whole thing. I made that mistake with my 20 yr old son (and a Cuban Cohiba Siglo) I wasn't paying attention and he was really puffing on it. Result: the dinner I had just bought for him went down the toilet. He does, however, still enjoy cigars, thanks more to his perseverence than his dad!

I've made the mistake of giving really good or expensive cigars to first time cigar smokers. Often, they end up finishing a third, or on a good day, half. Ultimately, it's the waste of a good smoke. I'm not saying give them some $1 El Cheapo, just not an Opus X. Maybe a nice Rocky Patel Edge? A very good cigar, yet inexpensive.

There is a lot of hype involved with the Opus X brand. I think a lot of it has to do with the marketing that A. Fuente put forward over 15 years ago. I bought two Opus X cigars a few months ago, put them in the humidor, and have smoked the last one tonight. It's not my cup of tea. To some people, this cigar is the creme of the crop and the best thing to happen to the cigar industry. I, on the other hand, feel that there are much better cigars on the market like Padron and Camacho. Personally, I don't feel that you should have to pay $12-$20 for a good cigar. I don't think I'll buy any more if they're available at my local cigar shop. I'm gonna stick with my usual smokes: C.A.O., Maria Guerrero, Oliva, Sancho Panza, and Punch.....all of which are decently priced and taste a lot better.
Baseball is like church. Many attend, but few understand.
I bought a box of DC's and a box of Pyramids about 5 or 4 years ago. I have been dissapointed in both.very one dimensionla "tastes", they had a metallic undertone all the way through.its a taste I often had in non cuban cigars and I hoped the Opus X was different. Al,so the price, far too much, you can get much better cubans at less than half the price. I am glad in tried them but I would not do it again now that I know how they taste.
Try and get cubans, your money would be spent much wiser and mor satifactory in the end.
I tend to agree with Rockhound. I've never gotten the enjoyment out of an OpusX that I get from many other (and mostly less expensive) cigars. For my money, I haven't found anything that goes down as good as Nicaraguan leaf. And while I do spend just as much as the Opus for an occasional Padron 30th Anniversary maduro (the best!), The CAO Anniversary, Oliva 'O' Classic, Savinelli Liga Especial, Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970, and Mayorga Maduro are better cigars (IMHO) than the Opux at a fraction of the price. On there other hand, that is the beauty of cigars... there is something out there for everyone!

I absolutely 100% agree with Rockhound. I also totally agree with his personal cigar choices. I too love CAO Brazilia and Camaroon, Maria Guerrero, RP Vintage 1990, Edge and Sun Grown, Punch Gran Cru, St Louis Ray, Joya de Nicaragua Antonio, La Flor de Nicaragua, Don Toma Signature Selection (total surprise)

Rarely if ever do I get an Opus that burns well. Smoked on Wendesday, relit it nine times. By that time it tasted like a wet sock. Most people I know have the same experience. I've tried aging (for years), dry boxing a few days prior to smoking...nothing works. They taste great but the canoeing, uneven burn and constant relights just make them not worth the trouble to me. For ultrapremiums, I'll stick with VSG, PAM and Tatuaje, which always burn and draw perfectly for me.
As they say different smokes for different smokes. I have about 400-500 diffrent sticks in my humidors. Some are JDN Antano and some are Fuente. Some cost $3.00 each and my Opus X "A"s cost me about $25.00 each. My SG Chateau's cost me $3.50 by the stick and my Cuban Partagas SD#4 cost me $220.00 by the box. I enjoy maduro, natural, sun-grown and cuban. I enjoy Fuente, Padron, Opus and Partagas as well as others.
I know a few things I can't stand including most CAO's,I dislike the taste of Mayorga, and the Aroma de Cuba aren't named properly should be more like the aroma de poop!
I know that Jeffreyrobert likes to bash the opus X whenever and wherever he gets the opportunity. He must be one of those whiney wimps who either can't find any product, can afford to purchase any hard to find product or simply doesn't have the ability to smoke any better product without pukeing his guts out each time he lights up. Jefferey I have said it before and I will say it again, most K-Mart stores have the White-Owl cigars that you are looking for and some even have that little white cap so you don't have to taste the tobacco on your lips... wimp.
brentef... I dont know if you actually read my post, but I was just asking if this would be a good cigar for my little brother who does not smoke cigars at all. At the time I had never smoked one and I did not know if it would be too strong or not. I have had a few since then and I enjoyed them. I'm not sure where you get the idea that I dont like them. maybe you should read a post before you comment.

Did you read jefferey's posts, or just forget to take your medication? He never bashed Opus, he just asked about them.
Jeff, you've gotten plenty of good advice. If I were you, I would consider a milder smoke for a first time smoker. A lot of first time smokers tend to like anything from the macanudo line.

Thats only about 2-3 bucks up from retail, so thats not too bad.
If you really want to make sure they burn well, give it about 6 hrs out of the dor before you start smoking. Fresh from the tobbaconist, they are very wet.
I just got a six cigar sampler pack of OpusX. I am going to let them settle and then fire one up. I shall let you all know how they are once I light them.
