I've read the beginner posts, on several web sites actually. Just wandering what specific brand humidors and where to find them, you would recommend. I plan on getting a digital hygrometer, Spanish cedar, etc. And am thinking I would need a 75 - 100 count humidor.

I found one that has a cutout to hold the Oasis electronic humidifer. Any value in that?

It also comes with:
Western Caliber III digital hygrometer
Western Humifier
holds up 150 (which I always read as 100+)
Glass top (which I am leaning towards)

$79.99

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have my list of sticks to try, but don't want to purchase too many, until I acquire and season a good humidor.

Try Tampa Humidor.
Great selection Cheap prices great customer service.
Your choice really comes down to a personal decision.
If you buy from a reputable place the rest works it self out.

Or even check out cheaphumidors.com. Trust me go bigger then you think you'll ever need, people cannot say this enough! I fist bought a 150 count, then a year later gave Bob Stabell a call. I'm now awaiting my Aristocrat end table.

Thanks guys. I've been on cheaphumidors a few times and can certainly find something there. In fact, mostof them look to be Tampas brand. Local shops don't have much of a selection unfortunately.

Go bigger... Where the hell were you guys when I was buying my gun safe!!! Ironically, I'm selling off most of the hunting arms anyway, due to a change in family hobbies. Which means they'll be some extra room in there. Hmm...

Humidor 70 degrees 70% humidity
Gun Safe 60 degrees 55% humidity
NEVER a break Mad

Or wait, would those guns really warp Big Grin

I would shoot more for 67 degrees and 65-68% RH. I personally use a wine cooler and keep my humidor in there.

Cheaphumidor is awesome. I purchased a 250 ct from them for a friend and it was awesome. You definitely want a 250-300ct. You can probably pick up a decent one for $150.

Forgo the cigar oasis if you haven't already purchased it. I originally went that route and swore by it. It was great. Then I found kitty litter beads. Do a search for kitty litter beads and you'll find some links. You want the ones WITHOUT the blue fragrance crystals.

These things keep your humi solid at whatever you want. Very little swing in RH. No water gets you to 63%-65% over time. Add a little water at a time. If you add too much, simply take it out and let it dry a day. You can put it in a small tupperware container.

Good luck and enjoy the new hobby.

Actually I would go with "smaller" boxes, that way within a year you will have one box with/for low RH, one with/for med. RH, and one with/for high RH. Each brand seams to need its own RH. (IMO)

A large half empty box will be harder to stablize, than a smaller one.

Cool

I bought a humidor from the Thompson catalog about 5 years ago with very positive results. Remember, when dropping the lid to a humidor it should never slam, only swoosh. This should be a good a good test.

I have to tell you this. I was in a B&M today and there was small humidor (maybe 25-50). The fella there couldn't get it open. I almost pried it open myself (which would have broken it), when I realized that there was a hidden slidelock. You couldn't see it to look at it, but the front had a slidelock piece that is a part of the box. Neat way to lock a humidor without a key.

Another way to test the seal is place a dollar bill halfway into the humidor and close the lid. The dollar bill should not come out without some difficulities. I've seen some that almost fall out with the lid closed.

I would for sure look into getting a bigger humi than you think you need. I do not know much about glass tops, but I hvae heard stories about them leaking RH.

Also look into Heartfelt Beads

for RH control. They keep your RH at whatever predetermined RH you buy. If you buy 65% and your RH raises the beads will suck up RH and if your RH gets to low...it will release RH.

Pretty cool.

Also look into Savoy for humidors, I have one. It is pretty solid.

Thanks. I made the mistak of going to a B&M today and ended up smoking a Fuente Hemingway- not the mistake!! Then I got to talking to a customer smoking a higher-end Pedron (also recommended the Savoy) and he talked me into bying the 1926 and 1964 that you all have recommended as well - again, not a mistake...well maybe. Because I bought a Torano 1959 as well. The mistake? I still don't have a humidor! I've settled on a 150 or so count for now.

So, in the mean time, I took a water pillow and placed in a cigar box with a hygrometer that I had lying around. Placed the entire box in our master bathroom closet. The closet read 70% and the box reads 68%, but it's only been 30 minutes. This is short term ONLY. I figure I'll get a couple weeks out of it, while I wait for and season my new humidor.

Let me know if I'm off my rocker with this idea. Also, should the bathroom door be open 1/3 way, or all the way? (KIDDING!!)

how long does the kitty litter and beads last? Im getting ready to go back to a sub and was thinking about taking a small humi with me. I have a cigar oasis that works great for my current box, and it can run on batteries, but wanted to investigate other options. (batteries and H2O take up space) The beads look pretty small.

I assume, that distilled water is available on your sub. I used kitty litter in Iraq, and one soap dish with holes (6 1/4") lasted 6 months in the tent, and 6 months in a dry, but A/C'ed hootch. Need to add water twice in tent and once in the hootch.
WinkBe safe out there....

9Sep.'08, I might add that my humidor was a Pelican 1450 Case.

Can you smoke on the sub? I'm sure they don't surface every night like they did in WW2. Do you have to go months between cigars?

Go with a Cigar Jar. It's about 20 bucks and holds about 20 cigars. The CJ comes with a cheap humidifier and does a decent job. Drop your smokes in with some cedar and seal it up. I bought one 10 years ago and I still use it to hold my NC's.
