If you're looking for rum, try:
Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 year old rum
or
Pyrat XO Reserve
We have a couple of bottles ready for our Holiday cigar parties.

RZC 23 is pretty much the only premium rum i keep (scotch guy), its awesome and for $40 you can't go wrong....i use their 15 year for mojitos, awesome.

unless you are buying for a wine nut, i'd stay away from wine as its a one shot deal... a nice bottle of whisky/rum last much longer. whisky is toughet to recomend because the range of flavors are diverse and intense, and so some brands won't agree with certain people.

can you give us any other info? scotch, bourbon, cognac?

Now, this is just my taste buds, but I love the Pyrat blanco but the XO reserve was so bad, I actually threw it out. Maybe it was a bad bottle. There are a lot of really good rums out there. If you get a chance, try Zaya 12 year.

I think a bottle of wine is a pretty good idea. It may not last as long as a bottle of liquor, but if it's good, whoever you give it to will remember it, and some good wines are fairly inexpensive. I just tried some port for about $12 per bottle and loved it. I'm giving my boss a bottle for X-Mas

I never knew a host who was offended by a bottle of good champagne. There are many good brands in the $30-$50 range.

If you look back a page or two, there is a thread called Champagne, looking for gourmets or something like that, that i started and got all sorts of discussion on types available.

I like the Veuve Cliquot small bottle. Can drink the whole thing myself without getting too tanked or having to save some in the bottle.

Its like a half bottle. Don't get those little ones that are a glass worth. I bought a bunch of different ones and they were awful. Someone said they were the ones used for the business class on the airlines.
Get the half bottle of the veuve cliquot yellow label brut for about 21 bucks. I like it.

A nice bottle of 18year Glenfiddich would be good that way you can enjoy some of it yourself. Oh don't forget to bring the cigars.

Most folks will appreciate a bottle of single malt scotch, a premium vodka, or any premium whiskey or bourbon. I like the idea of champagne, too.
I guess it depends on the circles you travel in. Jack Daniel's and Smirnoff's triple distilled keep me in good standing with my drinking friends. (These guys don't like cigars! They smoke disgusting cigarettes!). Wink
