One good thing about living in Philly is that they have quite a few establishments that serve a wide range of brews. I had a few the other day for the first time and was impressed. They were Fin Du Monde, St. Bernardus, and Kronenbourg. They were all very good. The Kronenbourg (France) was very crisp and almost had a slight taste of white grapes and grapefruit. The St. Bernardus (Belgium) was very dark, malty and fruity and I actually had it with dessert. I really enjoyed the Fin Du Monde (Quebec). I have been looking for this beer for some time and finally had it. It reminded me of Delirium Tremens which is one of my favorites.

A lot of people have this opinion but I have never understood it. It reminds me of my views on flavored cigars. They add the flavors to cover up the crap tabacco they use. If it weren't for the additives you wouldn't want to smoke it. Putting a beer in the freezer just covers over the fact that the beer tastes like urine (IMO). It's just so cold you really can't taste it. I think there are plenty of beers that go great in the summer time but have a nice flavor to them. I like a nice Hefeweizen in the summer personally. And there are plenty of lagers that are great for summer drinking that are light enough but still have flavor to enjoy. Dinkelacker has always been a favorite of mine.
I'm a big beer drinker and have just started home brewing again after a 10 year hiatus. My first new batch is under way, an Irish Red Ale. Just 3 to 4 weeks away from what I hope is an excellent brew. Lately though I have been enjoying a lot of the beers that the Stone Brewing Company has to offer. The 11th Aniversary Black IPA is especially good.

Anyone ever hear of Newport Storm? It's a small brewery in Newprt Rhode Island. They make great beer and every Friday night at 5:45 they have a brewery tour. I've been once and it was awesome. I recommend their beer it's great. We're plannin on going for another tour soon. It's 5 bucks and you get a NS glass and 5 16 oz beers, one while your taking the tour(blueberry ale), all while the tour leader drinks out of his huge growler. It's awesome.
If you can get hold of it my fave is from the Black Sheep Brewery, they make good classic ales and bitters. www.blacksheepbrewery.co.uk Very good beers and a staple for me.
For fans of real ale in New England, the New England Real Ale Exhibition is being held April 30 - May 3 in Somerville, MA. Here's a link.
I joined the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) in England and those were some very tasty ales!

Any of you Yanks ever had AleSmith Barrel Aged Speedway Stout?
Rate Beer gives this stout a 4.4 rating, and the alcohol level 12% (very nice).
"Pours black with a light brown ring. Nose is sick, bourbon, coffee, and chocolate with rich deep malts. Taste is sweet, bourbon with a big sweet chocolate feeling. Really nice and oh so awesome. This beer has been a long long long time coming for me and it was worth the wait."
Or a Three Floyds Oak Aged Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout, with a 4.47 rating from RB. Holy $hit this beer sounds good at 14% alcohol.
"Drank at Three Floyd’s Brewing Company during the 2007 Dark Lord Day: Black as night it had a slight brown head that left some nice brown lacing. The nose was huge and filled with expresso, chocolate and porty overtones. In the mouth it was the most dense, thick, syrupy, oily beer I have every tasted. While the alcohol lever is high (15%) and you know it is there, it is never hot. The flavors from the nose burst into the palate covering every nook and cranny. This is an intese freak of a beer that one can only drink in small quantities. However credit needs to be given as it is balanced which is not an easy feat for something this size."
Not available in Canada though. You Americans have the best beer.

I dont drink beer when smoking a cigar, I have either cognac, coffee or tea. But I do enjoy beer at other times. Ive always got a carton of heinekens in the fridge. Thats the only beer I drink

Leinenkugel for everyday (Dopplebock, Red, Creamy Dark). New Glarus Spotted Cow (only available in WI). Sprecher's Hefe Weiss or Black Bavarian for German style beer.
My favorite place to have a cigar when I'm eating out is an Irish pub in town, and I never miss a chance to have a Murphy's.

You guys need to try the micro brew "New Belgium" out of Colorado. I like the series "Fat Tire", "Mothership", and "1771". They come in 12 oz bottles now even at Target stores here in the midwest.
