OK, so I and some of my familyare going to new york this june. I saw the video and want to know if you all can help. of the places mentioned, where can I go with just a collared shirt, not a jacket, although I may have on one, but just a collared shirt, to enjoy a cigar and a drink. I may get my parents to join for a drink(they hate smoke) so which place is the best for having good air. what I mean is, they do their best to clean the smoke out. we plan on staying at the radisson on lexington, and we're going to go see chicago at the ambassador theatre. what can you all suggest? thanks alot in advance

Lexington Bar and Books: 74th and Lex. Jacket required. The Pen Top Bar (They have a new name but all you need to know is the location) on top of the Peninsula Hotel at 55th and 5th is outside so you shouldn't have a problem with smoke. A little expensive at $12.00 a Heinekin and $20.00 a Martini but a great place. Those will be in the general area. There is also Club Macanudo near 63rd and Madison but I am not a huge fan. Enjoy.

I was looking earlier and there as maggie's place, stout, murphy's, etc. just, which ones are traditional. like, I went to one a long time ago when my brother lived there. this was years ago, I was young and just followed him around. now, adult, I remember the place he took me. it had an upstairs that was your typical bar but downstairs was old world. it had a bar but this living room set up with what appeared to be a traditional irish band playing good ole music. where can I find a pub like that?!

SPT, Every place claims to be an authentic Irish Pub, just like every place claims to be an authentic Italian restaurant. Midtown is jammed packed with these imposters, cashing in on tourist ignorance, and you have to know how to decipher the BS from the real thing. Plenty of places are named Mc something or O' something, throw a shamrock on the sign, and have Guinness on tap. All three gestures are meaningless. There are few places that tap, gas and pour Guinness properly. Go to St. Dymphna's for that. They make a very decent Irish breakfast as well and are not at all preoccupied with what a tourist's idea of an Irish pub is. 118 St. Marks Place. You will not be disappointed. There are also a few great beer halls in NYC as well.

thanks a lot greg. I will definitely go there. I found this place call paddy reilly music bar. know anything about that place? again, thanks. Im looking for three things up there; a good cigar bar, a good irish pub( just as you described above, not fake) and a good place to go in little italy. these three are most important to me, now my fiancee, she wants to see the arts and other things like museum of modern art or whatever.

Paddy Reiily's has lots of live bands, some of them folky, some of them Irish imports, but the drinking there is pretty homogenized and supremely unremarkable. You had mentioned Stout in a previous email. That place is situated right outside of Madison Square Garden and Penn Station. There's a reason for that. That place is for tourists who want to go into the first bar they see and full of out-of-towners who don't know any better. And if you want to go to Little Italy for the sake of going to Little Italy, that's fine, but if you're going there in search of good Italian food...or even good Italian American food for that matter...well...remember what I said about tourist traps? Although there is one Italian American with decent food where they let you smoke, which suddenly makes their food taste a heck of a lot better, but their menu is as run-of-the-mill as any other red-sauce joint. So whether or not you want to make that concession is entirely up to you. It's called Florio's. There is a great Italian restaurant just on the outskirts of Little Italy in a neighborhood called NoLita (North of Little Italy). The restaurant it called Peasant. They have some great purveyors and the kitchen is headed up by someone who understands regional Italian cooking on the grassroots level. www.peasantnyc.com Hope this helps.
WOW! thanks a He'' of a lot. you are my man for this NY trip. I got irish pub, good italian, now what about the cigar bar. I an up in the air as to whether I will have a jacket in june so, is there a place that is laid back, good priced and serves drinks along with enough clean air that will keep my parents from complaining. also, I will be staying at the wellington which off hand I believe is on 7th ave. is there anything near by? damn, you the man greg, thanks for all this.

ONly Lexington Bar& Books and Grand Havana Room (which is a private club anyway) have jacket requirements. The rest just require that you dress, for the most part business casual...not necessarily with a jacket, but not dressed down either. Now, including your non-cigar-smoking parents in this could make your trip a limiting experience. If you are preoccupied with ensuring the comfort of nonsmokers around you...well, I have a hard time helping you here. Club Macanudo is large enough where they won't care if the patrons are just drinking. It is a very large space. You can just drink at Hudson Bar & Books as well, but it is a small neighborhood type bar. You'd be fine, but would your parents feel comfortable there? My guess is no. Beekman Bar & Books is also nice, but there is only smoking in the inner sanctum cigar room, which the owners do NOT like occupied by nonsmokers when serious smokers could be waiting for those chairs. However, everyone is welcome to drink up front in the lounge area. Merchant's is probably your best bet. Cigar bar, restaurant, cocktail lounge. So, I say, given your situation, either Merchant's or Club Mac, or even Carnegie Club. If you have nice weather, then the Peninsula Hotel rooftop would be just grand. But let's face it, STP, as nonsmokers, your parents will probably be quite sensitive to even trace amounts of cigar smoke. Cutting fees apply for all places.
again, you the man. really thanks for helping out. actually greg, im the only smoker going on this trip, ha! they are either going with me as a time out for a drink(and smoke for me) or we will split up and just me and fiancee will go to one of these places. I already have it set in my mind that Im going to a cigar bar if im going to new york. given it's june, maybe peninsula hotel is the best place. but carnegie club might have enough atmosphere and decor to attract the rest of my family. I imagine that it would be close to the theater given its name? might be a place to go after we see chicago. what's with the cutting fees. is that even it I buy a cigar there?
