Please don't think I'm tring to start an argument. That's not what I meant.I've spent a lot of time in Ireland, and you will not get an Irishman to say that we get the proper Guinness. I can't explain it but I've even heard that it has something to do with preservatives.I've never had a bad Guinness over there, it's like cream, over here it's bitter. The only way to prove it is to take a trip for yourself. Tel
I don't think that at all...I just know that it is the same stuff here. I would assume that in Ireland you just get the most freshest pint as opposed to the states. How could a true guinness drinker expect anything less in Ireland? Some of "new" guinnes accounts, try to cut corners selling it. Not all,, some. My direct price is $115.00 a 1/2. there is a $95.00 deposit on the spout and handle (because of the backwards l.c.b laws that date back to the 30's). $50.00 for the gage that you must purchase so you get the proper (pour) psi. not to mention the gas mix you need to have. and you need to regularly clean the nozzle and lines. It just may be as simple as that. There is no state brewery of guinness. Just a long boat ride.
Guinness in Ireland IS the same as in the States. It's the mixed gas, that I mentioned that causes the problem in the states. The pubs owner is your problem, not the product.

I have never been to Ireland to have a pint. BUT, I will say that I have had some good pints here and I have had some not do good ones. I have had mine poured improperly and I - being only 21 - offerd some advice to these older bartenders. Also I try to frequent places that run clean lines opposed to crudded ones.
BTW I am watching Neil Young on DVD from a show in Ireland, and just as I said this he took a sip of his Guinness. Good man...

Vince I'll be there! I do all my cigar shopping there. I live 10 minutes from it. Yeah man, the Sharp edge is the best for beer selection and to light your favorite smoke. BTW, every July (check the site for postings) my company & other wholesalers along with the Sharp Edge hold a two day beer event. Where I drink, I mean help, pour beers. Its' like $40.00 for each event (which each event lasts three hours) You get a little snifter, walk around with your smoke, sample endless amounts of beer from all over the world, and just have a great day get me @ jamesdrums66@comcast.net
I have the luxury of living in Belgium and therefore can go to my "local" for a nice Belgium beer. Then again I can drive 1 hour and be in Germany for nice Pils. 90 minutes and I am in France for some lovely wine. I go to Dublin every year on a flight costing under 100 dollars.
The choice is only limited by the time I have free ( 2 kids under 4).
Oh and the brick and motar shops seel Cuban Cigars !!
As for the "is it best in the land where it was brewed" question, for Guinness I have no doubt Ireland is the best. But then again, some bars in Dublin are better than others.
Beer is always better from the tap than the bottle. As for cans, leave them alone. The little widget in the bottom to give them a good head does little for me.
Now Whisky of course travels the world in bottles and is always the same. It is not always appropriate to drink a spirit.
However, for beer and smoking, the location and people you are with at the time, have a serious implication on how good they taste. Dublin is non-smoking. This takes away from some of the atmosphere - just look at the ceilings in old bars and you can imagine the years that have past, the discussions that have taken place and the beer/cigars that have been had.
And as for Irish theme bars, forget them. I would rather go to a real local bar and drink what is on offer. Just an opinion from one who has spent may nights in Irish theme bars.

Try the Seira Nevada Porter, if you haven't already.I think it is closer to the smoothness of the Guinness in Ireland. But it is stronger, 5.6% I beleive.
The sierra stuff is excellent...but I think a little on the opposite side of Guinness. Sierra Nevada uses a hell of a lot of hops...which I love..and if your a hop head like me and want to try a really good sierra, try the celebration, only comes out in the winter holiday months but worth the wait. As far as another good stout goes...look for Sam Smith oatmeal stout or Youngs double chocolate stout...Rouge chocolate stout to name a few.
jamesdrums66, 3 emails sent, all came back, not able to deliver, copyed the emil as you posted it a few posts ago. you can get me at Vince at Access995 dot com Enjoy, Vince

Tel...yeah man, go to www.sierranevada.com & look under the distribution section. Put in your state...boom! It might just direct you to the master distributor, so I'm sure there is a #, they will be able to tell you where you can find it. Let me know james
