Heading back (what used to be home) to NY for 5 nights....looking for old school (i.e. red sauce) or Southern Italian with lots of pesto and garlic....not into designer Italian food....had a great Italian meal at San Pietro a few years back....can someone recommend another very good place(s) either in Manhattan or on Long Island...not into Babbo, hear Il Mulino is not what it used to be, and I am not into Northern Italian cuisine. Sheepshead, can you help me out? Thanks.

Well, I can help you out on Long Island but it may be a bit of a hike for you if you're in the city.

Mario in Hauppauge on Motor Pkwy. is really nice.
There is also Ciao Baby in Commack on Vets Hwy. but that is a little more casual. The portions are HUGE!

How about Alfredo's? I remember eating at the one in Rome( They gave me the golden fork and spoon that was given to them by Gable and Lombard to use since I was the kid with a group with the US Ambassador. They were actually too big to use very easily. They are made of solid gold, and are quite soft and could be bent with ease. But, I digress..)

I ate at the one in NY many years ago as well and it was also "una buona magniatta!"

I love Lupa on Thompson Street between Houston and Bleeker.

It's a Mario Batali place, but way different from Babbo.

Really? No one is suggesting Florio's? The one Italian red sauce joint where you can smoke a cigar? (Mulberry and...Grand?)

There's also Gino's of Capri - better known as just Gino's. It's on Lex between 61st and 62nd. Great food and atmosphere (it was in a Woody Allen movie, I forget which.) Cash only and no reservations accepted. I had my first date with my wife there in October of 2000. Not that knowing that will your enrich your life any. Just sharing.

On Long Island, Caio Baby serves good food with locations in Commack and Massapequa Park area. Be warned though...the portions are HUGE! Imagine a rice ball the size of your head. The last time I went there I got 4 meals out of the portions and I'm NOT a small guy. Suggestion: go easy on dinner and save room for the desert.

In NYC, take your pick anywhere in Little Italy. Sandy's on 55th between 8th and Broadway is realy good. You can't spit in Manhattan and not hit an Italian restaurant.

Agree on Babbo, Lupa, Fiamma and Gino although those places are all pricey. Gino is really old school and a neat experience. Would also recommend Bottega del Vino if you know your wines.

One more, also old school - Nanni. Mid-town, near Grand Central. Northern Italian but you'll love it.
