Dre; I kept seeing this stuff up in Canada and now more around here - these smaller thin bottles of ice wine for outrageous prices. Have you ever tried it and what is the big deal? I don't know if it is a gimmick and I would be wasting my money or what. oh, read my champagne thread earlier. Talk about some bad stuff.
ya it's realy tasty stuff. Super expensive though. I carry a few bottles here in the store but it doesnt sell well with the locals. If you like ports you will love icewine. Its super sweet wine, if icewine is a 10 on the sweetness scale then a tawny port is about a 7. (just to give you an example) Thomas has the right idea with the wine, but the growers do with the grapes is wait until December or January to harvest the grapes. by law they have to be picked at -7 degrees C or lower. So in alot of the cases its in the middle of the night. Since its so cold out the grapes are frozen berries and when the pickers bring back the grapes they are emediatly pressed to rid them of all the ice (water). whats left is super concentrated juice that they turn into icewine. mmmmmmm good. Germany makes the best icewine but Canada is emerging as a big world player and alot of our stuff is now outscoring germany. The best examples will be very sweet and have a balanced acidity to make the sweetness not quite as overpowering. If you are going to try one get a german reisling or a canadian pinot blanc. Also be prepared to spend about $50 on a 375ml bottle. (1/2 bottle)

The only time I tried it was at a restaurant for $18 a glass. It was very sweet and I shook my head (so expensive). I am a fan of a muscat, though. Definitely cost effective. But hey, try it once.
