Any thoughts on this chain?

I had a special occasion to celebrate, so I took the little lady there. Been wanting to try it for a while. Had the NY strip.

I must say, the steak was good, but grotesquely overpriced.

As well, as a Canadian I think far better steak can be had for half the price -- Moishe's, Gibby's, Barberians and Carmens all come to mind.

Mind you, the actual meat was of fantastic quality, but it had no charcoal taste -- given that Mortons uses an oven to cook the meat and not a grill.

Any thoughts on this?

Never eaten there, even though there are several around town. But cooking steak in an oven?? WTF is that?

I've never been to a highly rated steakhouse and seen grill marks on my steak. A grilled steak is a totally different taste IMO.

As far as chain restaurants go, not bad...also depends where you live--if there aren't any top notch local steakhouses in your area, then certainly you will not be disappointed at Morton's...personally, when I visit a real good steak city I will patronize the local establishments instead, such as a Peter Luger (in Brooklyn or Great Neck), Metropolitan Grill (Seattle), or a Del Frisco's (chain--but only 5 or 6 locations) or a Chamberlain's when I am in Dallas.

Next time you are here in Dallas try Papas Brother or Bob's. They were rated #2 & 4 in the country last year in a couple of Mags.

I tried Bob's and did not care for it...tasted as though the steak was cooked at the bottom of a broiler...I should have also included Al Biernat's as a great Dallas steakhouse....as for the ratings in airline magazines, keep in mind that steakhouses pay to be part of those lists and that the lists are not objective...I've had some fairly mediocre steaks at some of these places--besides Bob's, Ringside (Portland) comes to mind.

I would believe that because alot of Mags named Emeril's Delmonico Steak House in Las Vegas as the best in the country. I did not care for it at all. I paid alot of money for steaks that were very mediocre to say the least.

But as far as personal experience, Papas Brothers is top notch! There is only 2 of them. One in Houston, and one in Dallas. They both have a great cigar room and one of the best wine cellars in DFW. There is also a new comer here in Dallas. Old Hickory at the Gaylord Texas Resort. The Chef there used to work for Papas Brothers and they are top notch too.

I'll give Papas Brothers a shot...have you been to Kirby's in Dallas?--for a moderate priced steakhouse, they serve a pretty good product.

you absolutly cant lose with peter lugers, but you dont go there for service, you go for great meat.
now mortons, there is one out here in great neck. i went there a few times last year. not bad, but not the best. overpriced? absolutly! did you get the crab cakes? they are imho dynomite!
if you want to try a pretty good chain, try ruths chris. they are all over and pretty good, but also pricey. i dont know aabout other states, but in new york all steak houses are high.

We have Morton's and Ruth's Chris Steakhouses here. However, there are about three local steakhouses that are as good if not better. I have been to Ruth's Chris but not Morton's.

Actually I live and work in right over by one on 114 in Southlake/ Grapevine. It is a pretty good place. Papas Brothers is my favorite though.

Morton's is not as good as Smith & Wollensky or Peter Lugers, IMHO. Nor as good as the Post House, Sparks. George and Georgetti in Chicago is also better. Morton's wet ages their meat, while the others dry age it. Eaten at a few Morton's in NY and Miami, and its real good, but not great.

Does the Mad Cow affect the taste?

Morton's is a good steak but not great.

Visitors tell me that the Morton’s in Chicago is the best in the chain. Not surprising since it is the original. I enjoy the steaks at Morton’s and Nine (which is owned by Arnie Morton’s son) and would gladly dine there anytime. Sure, Morton’s might be a couple bucks more than other places, but it is a “special occasion” steakhouse and is worth it. I am in love, though, with Gibson’s and am very loyal to their W.R. Chicago Cut. I second the previous nod to Gene & Georgetti. Best place to go for a lunch steak. And extremely cigar friendly. There is no better feeling in this world to finish a magnificent prime rib, order another martini, and fire up a cigar. Classic steakhouse.
