A little while ago I asked for some help with recipes for Chukar - a partridge. One of you was kind enough to remind be to look at my LL Bean Cookbook. Wow! Made one of the recipes on Saturday night and it was killer. I can't remember the name of it but it called for three chuckars, 4 shallots, l clove garlic, 2 tablesspoons of good paprika, OJ, white wine and sour cream. Absolutely outstanding! I imagine it would be just as good with chicken for those non hunters. A definite dinner party winner.

The evening would have been perfect if Gus the wonder dog, the guy who found the chuckars, hadn't decided to find and kill the neighborhood skunk late that evening. Kind of took the edge off the brandy and cigar donchknow? Eek

The recipe sounds great, I am sure it will work on ditch chickens also.I plan on going after phesants the 8th of Dec. here. We had our opening for ducks and geese this last weekend and I saw more birds than last year, good sign now if they stay around for a while. My dog has been hit several time by skunks and it make for a long ride home with the windows down. The tomatoe juice and dawn soap works about the 2nd time.Have a good and safe season.

Well, Ol' Gus has been under the weather since the skunk attack (his attack on the shunk that is). Had him to the vet yesterday. She didn't find any holes in him but found a good nail bed infection. I'm hoping the rabies booster and anti biotic shots have him a bit under the weather and he'll be up and bouncing around soon.

Took the former skunk to the vets as well to send off to check for rabies. Given all the blood Gus brought in, I think she's more concerned for me that him at the moment. After all, I haven't had my rabies shot. Keeping the old fingers crossed as I've heard the rabies series for humans is not exactly a walk in the park.

As for the skunk smell, its mostly gone. Found a new recipe a back when he killed his first skunk that works much better than tomato juice. 1 qt of hydrogen peroxide 3%, 1/4 cup? baking soda and a couple of tablespoons of dish soap. Mix it up, rub it all over the dog and let it stand for about 10 minutes then rinse off.

Rabies test on the skunk came back negative. Gus and I are in the clear. Will have to celebrate with one of my last remaining Opus X and a good whisky of some sort while watching the Yanks win tonight.

I will definitely have to get this cook book since Im getting tired of cooking my game in the same manner. As far as skunks! my pointer hates skunks and has nailed 2 in the back yard before they could do a direct on spray. He likes to prance around with the skunk in his mouth as though it were a pheasant rooster.

By all means, get the book. I've found some really amazing recipes in it for all sorts of game bird as well as anything else you'd hunt or fish for. Not camop food either. While some of it is, a lot of it is really fine table fare.

It must be in the genes as this is number two for mine as well. He has yet to get a direct belt of the spray but the striped cats do seem to let go as they die. It also seems the smell is in their blood as well since we're still trying to deskunk the house from where he did one of those patented dog shakes designed to spread the wealth.

Guess this is one case where I'm lucky I hnever trained Gus to retrieve. Once anything is dead, he'll point it for me but won't pick it up again. Sure enough, he pointed the dead skunk in the back yard. Big Grin I swear, if you don't have a sense of humor, you may not be able to survive these dogs.
