New Jersey has a high tobacco tax, but Pennsilvania, just down the pike from NJ has a few cigar shops with very reasonable prices.
As for duty free I would have no idea since I am not allowed to buy Duty Free in the USA and I am not allowed to bring Cuban cigars back from outside the country.

Newark DF has Davidoff, Avo, Macanudo. No Padrons last I looked. They may have Ashton. It is not a wide selection. You can take a peek when you land. I think you are better off going to a regular shop if you are looking for something specific. There is a JR Cigars on State Highway Rt. 10 in Whippany. In NYC, there are many options (search this forum) to find cigars from a wide variety of producers.
The risk of kicking butt is you get some crap on your shoe
See what you might like and order cigars delivered to where you are staying.
Better cigars and much greater selection.
If you are looking for cigars like Opus X or Ashton VSG in any quantity you will not find them on-line unless you are willing to pay very inflated prices.

thanks for taking the time to help me out with your replies guys
as prices in the states for non-cubans are vastly cheaper than cigar prices in ireland I won't quibble and will take your advice on getting things delivered to where i'm staying.
e.g. Griffin's prestige 4 pack in Dublin is 60 euro, roughly $94, whereas it retails on one of the sites listed by docbarry for $34.99! can't wait to get to NY boys!
thanks for the links doc, i'm totally in the dark and they help a lot
