Since Sheepshead Bay asked about Peasant Food I thought it would be interesting to also discuss your favorite COMFORT FOOD.
I think Meatloaf with Mashed Potatos and brown gravy is about as comforting as I can get and MrsDoc makes it just the way we enjoy it with onions on the side.
There are many others that I like such as Pot Roast with wide noodles (and gravy of course) and sometimes my German wife will make Sauerbratten with Spatzlie (German style pasta)
So what is your favorite comfort food?

Doc, does your wife make the spaetzle from scratch. If she does, is she shaving the dough from a wooden board into boiling water or is she using a press.Just don't tell me that she is buying them in packages. Now i'll go along with the Sauerbraten or Rouladen or Goulash,How about Jäger-Schnitzel and then wash it all down with a Viertele of Trollinger with Lemberger or even better a Viertele of Bietigheimer Schwarzriesling.

My wife uses her grandmothers recipe. I believe she takes a ball of dough and scrapes it along a cutter of some sort into a pot of boiling water.
As for Jaeger-Schnitzel, she makes it with a brown gravy and Lingon berries. Some red cabbage and you have a meal.

Doc,there're severall contrapptions on the market to make Spaetzle.I was just wondering about it.Is your wifes grandmother from Swabia(Württemberg)becaus that's where the Spaetzle come from.As for the Gravy with your Jägerschnitzel you should try to put Chanterelles(small yellow funnelshaped mushrooms)into it.The're a little prizy but very tasty and also very good with Game.

For some reason, the term comfort food always conjures up visions of snowy days to me. With this in mind - a good homemade chili would fit the bill for me. I make mine with a selection of peppers, sweet and hot, and usually with venison or buffalo.
