The wife and myself are taking a trip to the Northeast section of the U.S. in the latter part of May. I was wondering if people could chime in for great places to eat, smoke, and drink along the way. The must do's and the sort.
Newport, RI (2 days) Bar Harbor, ME (3 days) North Conway, NH (1 day) - near Mt Washington Burlington, VT (1 day)
The whole trip is roughly 10 days and we have some stuff planned. We have tickets to the mansions in Newport.
Thanks for the help.

You r more precisely visiting waht is referred to as New England.
Shanty on the Shore 181 Battery str., Burlington, VT. Been there for a late lunch. Good. Nice view of the lake and its hilly shores.
Unfortunately you r too early in the season to take the ferry from Burlington to Port Kent, NY http://www.ferries.com/ The ferry called the Adirondak is the oldest double ended ferry of all time. Almost 100 years old. It was a steam ferry until 1945 when it went throgh its first diesel conversion.
But u can c the docked ferries from the Shanty.

You might get lucky, the weather is finally getting decent here! Well, as decent as it ever is in NE

For Newport, if it's a weekend, I'd say you have to visit The Inn at Castle Hill. It's on the point and is a great outdoor gathering place (drinks and live music) - everyone from 18 - 80 years old.
Haven't been to the other places in years, so that info would be dated.
You should have a great time though - enjoy!

Burlington is a great town. You'll like it. its right on the water of lake champlain which is a massive, beautiful lake. At one point they were going to make it one of the great lakes but i think the people of vermont voted against it. There is a street in burlington called church st. along that there is tons or eating and shopping. I would suggest going to a place called 3 tomatoes . Great italian food. Of course like most places, smoking is not allowed anywhere. The only place you are going to find cigars is a place called garcia's, which is also on church st. I would also suggest you go to a place called lake champlain chocolates, they have the best chocolate ever! If you are interested in food, music, shopping, you will find it all on church st. which is a block away from the waterfront. its all walking distance. i would just park the car and head off on foot. if you want to drive 20 minutes you could go to a town called waterbury and go to the ben a jerrys ice cream factory. thats a good time if you have never been! Also in the waterbury area is the mountain resort STOWE. it will be summer but there are tons of mountains in the area to hike or bike up and around on. if you need any specifics like directions or phone numbers let me know.

A Ben and Jerry's factory tour is a must!!! If you go up route 7 in VT make a stop in at Dakin Farm for some awesome cheese, cured meats, maple syrup, etc... Also if you get the chance although it seems to be out of the way....stop at Tobacco Haven on route 13 just over the massachusetts border in Brookline, NH...Great B&M, awesome selection and nice people!

Hope that you enjoy our part of the country! Newport is a great town. We enjoy taking the Cliff Walk if the weather's nice. Also, at the end of the walk if you look right, if I recall correctly, there is a beach. If you get in the car and head out that way maybe 5 miles or so there is a nice wildlife preserve with good trail system within. For resturants, just stroll the waterfront late afternoon looing at menu's!
I would consider one night in Boothbay Harbor, ME and then two in Bar Harbor... Bar Harbor and Acadia are beautiful. Do NOT miss Somes Sound in Northeast Harbor, I think it is. http://www.state.me.us/doc/nri...rine/sites/nov98.htm Great walking trails over there!! Also, be sure to see the Botanical Gardens at the Asticou Inn (nic eview from resturant there too, if I recall) http://www.professionaltravelg...nn-Gardens-p1777917/ At least eat lunch, and a famous pop-over or two, at the Jordan Pond House within Acadia and do the 2 mile walking loop around the pond. If the weather is warm and they are serving outside, appetizer's or dinner at the Bar Harbor Inn is always nice. *There's a nice little trail to walk behind the Balance Rock Inn as you're walking around town...
North Conway- Eat at Bellini's for Italian and if it's sunny out, it is well worth the 10 minute drive to http://www.whitemountainhotel.com/ The view in the Ledges Dining Room is simply awesome and food is very good and they have a great Friday night seafood buffet... If you are a golfer, the No. Conway CC is nice and the only place I've played where a train goes through right in front of the 1st tee box, between it and the fairway! Drive around Jackson, NH.
As you plan the trip, you really should consider spending a night, or at least a few hours, walking around Portsmouth, NH. It is a great city on the coast less than a mile off the highway you'll have to travel to get into Maine (95 N). It has well over 100 resturants, one of the oldest settlements in the US (Strawberry Banke) and is a great little downtown to walk, shop and dine in. If you like touring homes, like the mansions in Newport, several old sea captain's homes offer tours and have the original furnishings... (Plus you can hit the NH State Liquor store at the traffic circle for some of the lowest priced booze in America.) Also, ten minutes away a drive around the 3 mile loop of Newcastle, NH is a MUST taking every street leading to the ocean to see 200 year old homes on the coast. Late afternoon cocktails or dinner outside at the Wentworth by the Sea Hotel & Marina would be nice there, too. http://www.wentworth.com/ The Green Monkey and Jumpin' Jays (EXCELLENT seafood) in Portsmouth are excellent but so are at least 2 dozen other places, and if you like margarita's, stop at Poco's by the tugboats.. (Federal Cigar is a good stop too. http://www.federalcigar.com/ )
ENJOY!! And safe travels.

Been to Vermont twice and this thread makes me nostalgic. I hope you had a chance to visit Shanty on the Shore. Awesome atmosphere and food. Three Tomatoes was very good, as well. If you made it to Stowe, I hope you had a chance to visit the restaurant at the Green Mountain Inn. The name of the dining room is the The Whip. I had an unbelievable steak there in 2005.
