I have become recently interested in rum and was wondering, I see that appleton has been suggested but my local store only has appleton xo or xv or something of the sort. How does this type stand up. I didnt see anything like flor de cana though. I've never ventured toward rums but there's a first for everything.

Cockspur VSOR (Barbados) and Barbancourt 5 Star Rhum (Haiti) are also excellent sippin' rums with a cigar. Matusalem Gran Reserva Rum(Dominican Republic) is a fine choice, as well.

Scotty, have you done any rum tasting thus far? We would be interested in your findings. This thread gave me inspiration to make a rum purchase myself...
I am the rum God !!! hee hee Dont care for whisk, boubons, scoth, etc. Although I do indulge in some nice cognac every now and then.
I only like dark rums.
The Anejo for a classy top shelf rum...10 Cane for a slightly sweeter sipping rum...I have heard decent thngs about Appleton but havent had the chance to try it. Matusalem Espiritu De Cuba is another good rum.
Hate to say it on this board but I like Tommy Bahama Golden Sun...Nothing fancy and not too shabby for the money. I tried the Cruzan estate light rum and didnt care for it too much.
I saw a bottle of NAVY BlackStrap Rum. I guess it is made form blackstrap mollasses. It is VERY dark. I am hoping to try this weekend if I am not on-call.
if I am cooking I will use the old classic Myers Dark Rum.
Years ago I used to be Bacardi, Ron Rico, Captain, etc fan, but as years passd I realized these rums were best in mixed drinks and were not sipping rums.

GONZO !!!
Good stuff Gonzo. Only thing I dissagree with is Bacardi not being a good sipping Rum. Please give Bacardi 8 a chance. I love this Rum. It could be taste opinion but I believe this is a top notch sipping Rum with great complexity.

I agree the B8 is a very nice reasonably priced rum.

You can never go wrong with Mount Gay Extra Old! Straight up or with one cube, it's great with or without a cigar. The aged Flor de Canas are great as well though somewhat more difficult to find.
In my opinion, there's Pyrat Cask 23, and then there's everything else.
Cask 23 is the single best liquid I've ever had in my mouth, like a thick caramel with undertones of burnt orange peel. I've seen it online recently for as little as $235/bottle, which is what I've paid for it at the Pyrat distillery on Anguilla.
