Any recommendations on hotels in Key West, something family friendly. I'm going there with my 13 year old son in June to go fishing and exploring for a couple of days.

Any other recommendations on fishing and exploring would be appreciated.

Rented a house down there a few years ago. Don't recall the name off hand but it was on the old navy housing. Great place for around $1,300 for the week. You'll have a blast. Make sure to check out Flying Monkeys for some drinks! If you're into NC's, plenty of shops there to check out. One I liked was off of Front St.

Thanks for the response. In terms of the cigar stores, are they decent prices or stupid tourist prices?

We were down there this past July and stayed at the La Concha hotel (I think, it was right on Duval St., amongst all the shops). It is the tallest building in Key West and you can go up there and watch the sunset every evening-very nice.

As far as exploring, this trip was my favorite adventure ever! There are boat trips to the Dry Tortugas (afterwards, we found out you can take a sea plane out there for the same price. I would do that over the boat, but we did see flying fish on the way back and I don't know if I will ever see them again.) It's about 2 hours west of Key West. There is an old Fort from the Civil War you can explore. Also, they provide breakfast and lunch on the boat and snorkeling equipment.

I had never been snorkeling and it was very cool! We saw barracuda, squid, seahorses and all kinds of other fish. It was a lot of fun. If you have the time, I would highly suggest it.

Cigars: I had taken a hiatus from smoking until I picked one up down there. It was a barber pole at a stand on the streets and it was very good and very reasonably priced.

I wish I could remember the name of this place. The prices were pretty much what you'd expect to find anywhere in the US. At least I didn't look at the prices and think that they were too high. I found a nice stick that was like a 52x6 or so, rolled with a combo of natural and maduro to give it a spiral look. It was locally rolled, or so he claimed. Anyway, I thought it was pretty good. I brought home three and think that they got even better with a year on them. As already stated, there is a ton to do there. The boat ride to the fort is long but the trip is pretty cool. Personally after going to the keys I don't have the urge to travel outside the U.S. because I had such a good time down there.

I stayed at this place a couple of years ago. It is a time share but they did not hit you over the head with it. It is condo stuyle accomodations.

I went to key west a few years ago with friends. we stood at a La quinta inn and rented scooters to get around. alot of nice things to see . . theres the 90 miles to cuba lookout . . the board walk has some great perfromers . when i was there they had the bed parade. can check out hemmingways place. But make sure you stop At Sloppy Joes a place inspired by hemmingway good food and frozen drinks. try the rum runner . . Theres also a shop down the block from sloppy's a local roller good stuff resonable price. Hope you and your son enjoy!

Forgot to mention, check out the harbor and the restaurants around the harbor. Some huge tarpon in there that come up when the boats dock and clean their catch. Also at night you can see them under the lights. The Green Turtle has some good food. I don't think I had a bad meal there. Also, around the end of route 1 was a little bbq place that was awesome! Wish I could go back!

I've got a buddy there right now.

Where are some good places to buy cigars at? He bought an Acid cigar last night, got back to his hotel and realized he got ripped off.

very small and cool b&b, quiet and family friendly. This is on Olivia St. 1 block from Duvall. It was one of our favorite vacations so far, the lifestyle and speed either suits your or it doesn't.

I'm dying to go back to key west to do some more fishing. The one time we got a hotel we stayed at the Pegasus. They have a hot tub up on the roof. The schooner wharf had a guy rolling cigars there. I didn't try one so I'm not sure how good they are.

Tell him to check out the place on Fitzpatrick St. I thought they had one of the better Stocked humi's in Key West. Wish I could remember the name. I remember that we stayed in a house on Flemming St. just off Duval.

After a search I think it's Tropical Republic Inc. at 112 Fitzpatrick St.
