Decided to try a new brew tonight. Got a six pack of Smithwicks Irish Ale. I'm impressed! What is your favorite import (if you live in US), or favorite American beer (outside US)?

For my money everything Fullers makes is much better than guinness. Hell I'll even take murphys over guinness. Fullers ESB, london pride and 1845 are great. Black sheep brewery is another very good english brewery. They yorkshire ale called riggswelter that is fantastic.
Fullers london pride and whitbread pale are two of my favorites these days. Can't get enough english beer.

Well I'll be damned... they still make Murphy's? I swear, it disappeared off of every store shelf in my hometown and I haven't seen a can in years. I will say that Murphy's seems to travel better than Guinness in a can. However, a pint of Guinness straight from the draft in the mother country is a thing of beauty.

i argee sean, i think murphy's is more substantial where as Guinness (i love both) is a very light beer with low alcohol and so doesn't have a shelf life. i think this is why is has difficulty in the US...unless a pub is cranking out kegs of Guinness you have a good shot of getting a bad pint. I drink a fair amount of guinness and i won't order if it the joint has all Bud and miller on tap and it looks like that guinness handle never gets pulled.
smitty's was a good release and good mass produced beer. funny enough, word on the street is that it was released as a result of a BASS snafu. obviously bass/guinness are different companies, but they co branded a lot of stuff for black and tans. glasses, signage etc. anyway 2-3 years ago bass said they weren't going to advertise with guinness anymore.....so guinness said, ok, well we have this other beer, smithwick's, that we'll push in bass' place. and so far smitty's is blowing the doors off bass. i'm sure someone at bass got fired over that.

Good backstory! Hey, I'm damn glad they had the SNAFU and started pushing Smitty's. Here's a relevant question since we're talking about that glorious brew: Do you refer to it as "Smithwick's, Smittick's or Smithick's?"

Another question: Do you prefer Guinness/Harp Black & Tans or the Guinness/Bass mix? Or maybe another combo of Porter/Stout and Lager/Ale to make a B&T?
