ELAW, you have probably never been to my town, but I have been to yours. In fact I went to my first two years of college in Franklin, Indiana (back in 1964 and 65). Hopefully there are better restaurants in Indianapolis now, because back then the best was none too good.
Nope, never to NY, small world. We considered buying property in the Fraklin area. Just right for me = a little city/ a little country. Was Gray Brothers resturantin Mooresville around back then?

Not quite in your town, but just over the border is Legal Seafood, in Short Hills. Pretty damn good seafood.

I hope you don't plan on sending him to the Short Hills mall, with his wife. Unless you want him to remorgatge his new home after the family vacation.
"They're not real Cubans. They're Dominicans." Yeah. I'm a little worried. When there's no work, and the people get restless, who do you think they come after?... El Presidente!

You are correct! I forgot about that place...since parking is such a pain in the RASS I rarely go...probably been to the original in Boston more. I like the whole belly clams and chowder there.

Thats for sure. Not to mention the longass wait to get in. Half the time, I intend to go there and I end up in Joe's or Paparazzi. If memory serves, the one in Boston is much bigger. I'll have to try the whole belly clams next time.

If you're in the Dublin, OH area check out Jason's for Chinese, Stoney River for steaks or Brazenhead for the Irish experience. On a warm night, a cigar on the patio doesn't get any better.
Although I don't live there anymore, if you're in Rochester or Syracuse, NY you have to go to Dinosaur BBQ. Great food, great music, great atmosphere...as long as you don't mind a waitress with a biker attitude.
On one end of the spectrum (lunch & dinner, $15): Dixie Bones in Woodbridge, VA; southern bbq - ribs, catfish, etc. Be prepared to wait for a table
One the other end (dinner - $65): Obelisk in DC; probably one of the best authentic Italian restaurants we've been to - small and cozy. This coming from someone who used to work in Milan (very fussy about Italian food).
From my school days all those years ago, but still going strong, lunch at Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor, MI is not to be missed. The place is hopping any Saturday morning, but football Saturdays are special. They also have one of the coolest catalogs out there.
Well, even though it's my secondary residence, I spend enough time there to call it "my city", so here it goes: East Hampton, NY
Breakfast: For a healthy breakfast, Babette's. Great turkey sausage, smoothies, and that kind of stuff. Not so healthy...For the best egg dishes, and an amazing huevos rancheros...The Estia Cantina
Lunch: Any of the roadside clam bar / seafood joints on the Napeague stretch
Dinner: Nick and Tony's, The American Hotel, Della Femina or 1770 House
Steak: Della Femina in East Hampton or Bobby Van's in Bridgehampton
Pizza: For authentic Italian Pizza...Citta Nuova For NY style Pizza...Astro's Pizza
Dessert: Scoop du Jour
Burgers: Rowdy Hall
Cigar Store: "The Cigar Store", formerly "Blue Train Tobacco"

Gonna jump right into steaks and cigars as most of my favorite eats are not really in the downtown area.
Steaks - Chicago Chop House hand down, the place is incredible. IMO it beats Ruth Criss, Sullivans, Mortons, and Gibsons handily. (although they are also good)
Cigar Lounge - Sullivans has a pretty awesome one, bunch of leather couches and chairs and some plasma tv's. Not a huge selection of cigars but since you can just bring your own its not a problem. I have also heard good things about Ditkas as a place to smoke, also supposed to have good bar food, burgers and whatnot.
Cigar Store - Jack Schwartz under the board of trade. They have just about everything under the sun and most stuff right at MSRP. However be aware of the 20% or so tax, it makes a big difference. Only major drawback is that since the store is in the loop it closes at 5ish on weekdays and is closed on weekends.
One last note to potential travellers, the anti smoking ban takes full effect Jan 1 2008 (in grace period now). So I am not sure how that will change things. Guess I will repost after that time with updates.

How about the Willard? Doc was it there when you were in Franklin. Hardly anything to brag about food wise but the atmosphere for a small town bar is pretty cool. Doc, I graduated from Franklin College you may not care but I had to say something about your post to Elaw.

Have not been there. I'm finding more and more of the little places like this. Have you checked out Oaken Barrell in Greenwood. Great beers and really inexpensive food. Just wish they allowed smoking.
