Bottle, Can, or Draft.

I have had the can and draft and liked them both. Just tried out of the bottle and it tastes different to me. Kind of flat, and yes I had more than one. Opinions?

Only way to drink it is draught . . . in Ireland. Everywhere else it is not the same.

Never had it in Dublin, but I agree with the Draft, then can, then bottle order. Mine in the bottle have still been good, though, and not flat at all.

Guinness introduced the bottle for two reasons. 1) its an expensive beer and a bar is more likely to take a couple cases of bottles than add a tap line (and drinking a can out of anything other than a glass is blasphamy). and 2) it has a much smoother taste. its the same guinness but the widget in the bottle adds more bubbles everytime you bring the bottle to your mouth and back down. this makes the brew taste lighter and therefore easier to drink for all those bud/miller/coors diehards. it taste like guinness light. this is why the bottle says "drink from bottle"...which is not the proper way to appeciate any good beer. you pour it in a glass so that the aroma of the head adds to the flavor. but, but guinness further encouraging you to 'drink from the bottle' they are saying they don't want to you take in the beer aromas, which goes further to dumb down the full flavor of the beer. its not bad at all, again, its the same brew. but it is intended to attract frirst timers by taking the edge of off the stout, which hope they'll eventually move to draught.

if i'm at a dive, i'll order the bottle, because if its on tap its usually a bad keg or horrible tap lines. the lower alchohol in guinness means shorter shelf live. this is why i beleive you find people who hate guinness or say that "its way better in ireland". fresher the better. and only order from a joint you know sells lots of guinness.

Actually guinness is a low gravity light bodied beer with no flavoring or aroma hops. Its probably one of the cheapest beers you can make.

The widget doesn't do anything after the first discharge. Nitrogen in suspension is much more stable than C02. It needs to be jostled around quite a bit to break free. When guinness is bottled or canned, they add a drop of liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen immediately begins to boil and the bottle or can is sealed. This pressurizes the head space and drives the beer through small holes in the widget that approximate the holes in a restrictor plate of a stout tower. When you crack the can the beer is driven through the small holes in the widget and the nitrogen breaks out of suspension. The few nitrogen bubbles that escape create a chain reaction which creates the cascading bubbles effect that pub beer has. So it really doesn't create more bubbles. Actually I think guinness and most widgetized beer gets kind of boring if you let it sit too long. It has a very low carbonation level per the style guidelines.

I thought the widget-bottle was CO2 and the can was Nitrogen?

Its a mixture of approximately 75%nitrogen and 25% co2, also known as guinness gas or beer gas.

There is no need for a widget in c02 beer. It would actually cause too much foam.

Aha! Thanks for the answer. I have a friend that evidently had heard otherwise and maintained a different explanation...
So, I have a legitimate reason for telling people I just have a case of beer gas? Wink

nitrogen yield finer bulbs for a creamier taste. i doubt debate the lightness of guinness, you can pound this stuff all day. personally i prefer belgian ale's. But to someone drinking bud/miller lights it has a strong taste...its all relative. to us, it extremely light, to them its strong. and the design of the bottle was at attract NEW drinkers, not established hopheads. and new or mass produced domestic beer drinkers find it hard to drink.

As for the widget, its a one-shot deal in the can, but not in bottle...most is released once you pop the top, but it continues to releaes a little everytime you sip as i mentioned before. i'm sure if you google it you'll find info on this. take care.

Pmp, are you in CA? I live in AZ and I'm trying to figure which regional places may have 38.
Ironically, Murphy's isn't available in my hometown any more... just disappeared awhile back...

Yeah, I'm in Cali. Bevmo is only in Cali I think but they ship nationwide and I know they carry it. You may be able to find out who else carries it on their website. Its North Coast Brewing Co.

Thanks! I can't hold out much hope for shipping (to AZ...) but I'll definitely check out the website and see what I can find.

I'm not doing oak for any of my beers or wines. Its too expensive. For a more widely available commercial example of a barrel aged ale try firestone double barrel. Its a bit on the sweet side but its quite a good beer.

I bet that oak aged imperial is pretty good.

Firestone makes a lager, a pale ale, and one they call double barrel. The double barrel is good. I think technically its an american amber but I don't remember. It tastes vaguely reminicscent of english beer to me because of the crystal malt.

My absolute favorite beer these days is fullers london pride. That stuff rules.
