There's a 15 year old Barbancourt that's very good, as well as an 8 year old Flor de Caña from Nicaragua, if I recall correctly.
But short of that, or some of the Cuban rums (absolutely the best these days is the CANAY ORO LIGERO...makes Havana Club, regardless of age, taste like isopropyl alcohol), an excellent rum that people rarely mention is BACARDI SELECT. Not the 8 or the añejo, but just the "Select". It is very similar in taste and character to many of the Cuban rums, most notably the Havana Club Añejo 7 Años.

I just finished a bottle of cruzan single barrel a while back that was good. It has some serious carmel notes to it. It went really well with a nice full bodied maduro.

Great rum is undervalued. You can get fine stuff for little money. I'm fond of Bacardi 8, Barbancourt 15, Pampero (not sure on the spelling, it's from Venezuela), Ron Zacapa and Montecristo to name a few. I don't know all the prices, but I've bought a bottle of Bacardi 8 for about $22 in New York City, which is a true steal.

I found the Bacardi 8 to be kind of 'hot'. The Select at about $11 is a lot smoother. But the question is...do you want to support the Bacardi dynasty? One that subjugates the Cuban people to the iron arm of Castro by throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at pandering politicians who perpetuate the farce that is the 'embargo'...the thing that will NEVER topple Castro, and will only continue to serve to EMPOWER him and keep him in power. Then again, the name is owned by some giant liquor congolmerate, and the actual family is simply living off its history of royalties, so who cares. But between the 8 and the Select...the latter will be significantly smoother and palateable neat or on the rocks...

both are too sugary (like candy) for me and always give me a hangover headache(perhaps it has some anti-marisy ingredient in it, LOL),compared too Brugal, Barbanuourt any of the fine Cuban rums, Zaya which people seem to be thrilled over , is like a sweet whiskey compared to Anniversaro, even La Flor de Cana 5YO is pretty tasty.

I had the Pyrat XO for the first time a few weeks ago. It had a very strong orange flavor with just a bit more than a hint of vanilla. I'm sure many will enjoy it, but it didn't suit me.
