So here's the thing. Im going to new york next week. my parents are going with me and my mom has heard of canal st. I guess they sell all kinds of things there, top on her list is a good purse. fine and well. but how do you tell what's real and what's fake. like me for example. I wouldnt have the slightest idea what would be real. I dont even have an interest in buying from street vendors but I have heard that you can get the real deal. The only thing I would be interested in is a watch. other than that, I cant think of anything. and these females with their purses. How can I help my mom and possibly my fiancee from getting taken. is there a site or something that I can go to? does anyone have experience and could tell me what to look for for say a coach purse or a good watch.

If you are looking for the genuine article you will probably not find it on Canal St.

Purses and other womens accessories can be had at places like Macys, Bergdoff-Goodman, Sachs 5th Ave.

Watches at Tourneau Corner.

None of the above are cheap, but they are genuine.

Brothers, let me remind you of the words of Charles M. Province, U.S. Army:

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet

Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

SPT, it is a given that everything on Canal St. is fake. This is not even controversial. The vendors there do not pretend that they hock the real thing, and most of the patrons knowingly buy a counterfeit product. It must seem a bit strange, this dynamic, but that is how it works there. If you are looking for a genuine Prada or Luis Vuitton, do not buy it from the street.

As of lately most of those vendors have been shut down by raids.. but still the next day or so they sprout out again.. EVERYTHING IN CHINATOWN IS FAKE! The only reason why you would go there is because you want fakes, and good food. But if you want the slightly better looking fakes.... ask for the good fakes... they usually keep them in the back away from the open.
The cologne's and perfume are watered down.
If you're looking for a real thing, chinatown is not the place... go to what docbarry suggested.

Anything you buy from any street vendor in NYC is fake.

Take Doc's advice. There's a Tourneau right outside Penn Station on 34th St and 7th ave). Macy's is also right across the street.

thanks. this is what I, capital I, figured. somehow tho, I think my mother got it in her head she can get a good coach for cheap. I never buy from the street. I figure it would be like going to cuba and getting a 'cuban cigar' from a street vendor.

If you buy a knock off, whether it's a purse, a watch or any other item, you help support the sweat shops that force children to make this crap.

there's a story my brother keeps telling that he bought a watch from some street guy in the financial district for 90$. he said that he later took it to a jeweler and was told it was real. think that can happen? just talking here. i dont think I'll be buying a watch from the street. rather spend 50 on a cigar at the lounges.

What brand was it? If it was a Timex, I'm sure it was real, but if it were say a Tag, Torneau, Rolex, etc... I seriously doubt that it was real. The other question that comes to mind is how well that jewler look at that watch? Did they take the back plate off and look at the internal structure of the watch? The band and shell might be real, but the internal workings might be low-quality crap that might only tell the right time twice a day.
