For all you traveling cigar/beer enthusiasts....if for what ever reason, you end up in pittsburgh pa...you must head to the sharp edge creek house or beer emporium. Some of the best beers in the world (specializing in belgium beers), on draught, (plus a million bottle beers!) reside in this "beer house". Make sure to have your favorite smokes with you, because you can fire at will...check it out www.sharpedgebeer.com oh yeah, bring an appetite!!! Big Grin

Great advertisement.
I might be travelling to Pittsburg this year, if plans don't work out. I'll look the place up.

Do you sell cigars there, as well? If so, do you carry all the top brands and are your prices competitive? Or should I bring my own?...which I will anyway--don't leave home without them.

I love a good wheat beer, but oddly, the Hoegarrden does not do much for me. It's pure white/wheat tasting... It is good to try, but do not buy by the litre.

interesting, i am a beer lover and the ability to light up a cigar is perfect. however, i'm always hesitent of places with hundreds of beers on tap. there is absolutely no way they can have proper turnover of the beer to ensure freshness. I'm sure there are a good 20 brands that do enough volume for proper turnover, but i'd hesitate on picking an umpopular beer.

i'm sure this place takes enough pride in beer to ensure proper turnover, its just something i've noticed with 'beer garden' type places.

still a cigar and a great beer selection is awesome.

You absolutly right..there are times when you can't turn over draught beer in time. But this place is known for doing just that...in fact, the owner was just knighted in belgium for having the largest belgium beer bar(s) in the states..beer geeks from miles around seek him out. A lot of the beers that he has on draught, come in smaller kegs..1/6 barrels..1/8 so on...quick movers, he'll use the standard 1/2's

A good local made Belgian style is Flying Fish Belgian Dubbel. Made in good 'ol South Jersey. Holds up to 'gars and strong foods quite nicely!

Another favorite is Ommegang Abbey, a Trappist Belgian that goes great with savory and roasted dishes, as well as cigars! It's made in Cooperstown NY.

Great, we need more beer geek places like this. my other peeve is a pub who doesn't consistenly clean its beer lines. this SHOULD be a health hazard like not cleaning prep tables in a restaurant kitchen.

Tel, i think you're saying that Guinness doesn't travel well outside of Irl and goes bad? crazy talk tastes the same here as it does there. the only issue is the Guinness does tend to go bad slightly quicker due ot its lower alcohol content. I never order draught Guinness at a pub that doesn't appear to sell a lot of it. usualy bad Guinness and they just keep it on tap for an image. its also probably means thye don't consistently clean the lines. i'll take the Guinness bottle in these joints or some other beer.

well in Pa. bars must clean their lines every two weeks...Guinness is the same in Ireland as it is here...has a keg life of about six months but if you can't sell guinness in six months, you have no business having it in your bar...sick to bud!! Also, sometimes a tavern may need to check their gas psi. Too high can over carbonate the barrel and your left with guinness that taste like ass. pretty much shot and nothing you can do about it

Ok boys, lets go to Guinness school.
There is only one way to properly dispense Guinness keg, MIXED GAS. 25% CO2, 75% nitrogen. The nitrogen is what gives Guinness its tight and creamy head and makes the bubble cascade on the side of a CLEAN glass.

As well as regular line cleaning, every night, pubs should remove and clean the fitting at the end of their tap and leave it soak in water until the start of the next day. (black funnel and screen)

Guinness comes in 2 types of bottles and a big difference in the alcohol and blend. One is extra stout(no head & higher alcohol, longer shelf life, very bitter and acidic taste), the other is Pub Draught. Pub draught also comes in a can. Both Pub Draughts can be identified by the "Rocket Widget" in the container that contains the Nitrogen that activated the product.

To make sure you are getting fresh product read the code date. Guinness beers use a DDMMYY expiration date "written backwards". i.e. 402181, means Dec 18, 2004, which means don't drink it after this date.

3 months from manufacture is the company recommended shelf life for all Guinness product, kegs or bottle/can.

---GIGFY

PS: To start the day off right, try it over your favorite breakfast cereal.

I agree with what Paleto said about cleaning the lines.I've sat in pubs in Ireland and watched in disbaliefe while they poored pint after pint down the drain, wouldn't sell it till it was fit to sell. While in Ireland that is all I drink. While in Ireland my wife who is a Donnelley, related to Dan Donnelley will drink Guiness , but wount touch it over here, it's not the same. I didn't believe it the first time I was told that myself, but after many trips to both Ireland and Enland I am a firm believer. The Guiness in England isn't even the same. My original question was simply asking if the Belgum beer is the same as what you get over there. I get it here in bottles, and like it but was just couriouse. No offense intended.
