I am heading to our Nations Capitol and I was wondering if any of you are aware of what the smoking status is there? Are there any places I should visit. I will be right near the Capitol Building during my stay. Any assistance you can provide would be appreciated.
There's also Ozio's or Orio's or something like that. A little trendy (for DC), a little euro-trashy, and pretty expensive, but also fun. I know the smoking ban there for bars kicks in at the end of this month, but cigar bars are exempted. Pretty sure Shelly's qualifies, and maybe Ozio will too.

Thanks for the information. I've been on the road lots the past few weeks and with all the changing smoking laws it's hard to keep up.I am definitely going to take your suggestions and enjoy a good cigar in these places. Definitely going to bring my own since what they have are probably going to be overpriced.
You might do a search on this question, as it was covered in this forum some time ago. I remember a pleasant dining experience in a steak house I learned of from this forum. Not sure of the spelling, but something like McCormick and Schmitts.

By the way, it's McCormick and Schmick's and it's a seafood resaurant, but if there's anything you want to know about dining in DC just ask. I've lived in the city for over 25 years and know the restaurant scene better than most.
I used to live in Northern Virginia when I was growing up. I travel to and from the DC area several times a year on business. Just started smoking cigars regularly about a year ago. The whole DC area or National Capitol Region has changed so much since I lived there. I'm aware of a few good restaurants but wasn't sure what the smoking status of the Nations Capital was and that's the reason for the post. I've got an upcoming business trip to the area and always like to have a list of a few places to enjoy a good cigar if time permits. The last time I was in DC around June/July the bar at the hotel where I was staying allowed cigar smoking. That was great.Just wanted to make sure that if things changed I was aware of them changing since I'm heading back to the area. These days it's harder and harder to find a decent place to smoke.
Appreciate all of the advice I've gotten. I did try to do a search on Washington D.C. but perhaps I didn't type it correctly because the search came up blank....granted I didn't try variations of the search so maybe that's where I made my error.
I'll be staying near Connecticut Ave I believe so I will definitely have to try some of these places out in the evenings when I am done with business for the day.
I live in DC now and have been here since 1993, Shellys is great as is Ozio, most of the steak houses. However one place that is really nice is Bistro Du Coin, right down the street from the Hilton on Ct Ave. Nice French Bistro that is very cigar friendly--the owner is always there smoking a nice cuban. Also, on Dec 18th I think, McFadden's by GWU is having a last smoke to celebrate DC's transition into facism. Tickets are 75 at door and includes many smokes as well as all the booze you can drink--as well as mucho young GWU co-eds--if you are a single guy.
If you near the Hill, head over the Monocle on the Senate side. Great place to smoke with some of the nation's power players--reps,Senators, lobbyists.
I want to thank you all for your suggestions for my trip. Unfortunately, I did not have time to visit any of these places as my trip was filled with too much business....as always happens when I go to DC.
I will keep these in mind for my next visit to DC....probably only a few weeks away.
