Slodogg,

Are you by chance a retired military member or a government DoD civilian employee? I have a great suggestion, but it is limited to those individuals (as well as active duty military).

Side note, I highly recommend a snorkeling afternoon at Hanama Bay, not far from downtown.

If you stay in Waikiki, it will feel like staying in Manhattan with all the high rises. It is worth exploring the island. The north shore has big waves in the fall/winter. Waimea, Sunset, Pipeline all are very worthwhile if you like beaches. On the way to the north shore is the Dole Plantation (pineapple tourist stop). The east side beachs where Hanauma Bay (snorkel in fish preserve), Sandy & Makapuu beaches are great for body surfing, Lanikai beach is pretty pristine with sugar white sand beach and clear water. The water temperature is still in the mid 70's in the winter. Right now is the cold season and it is still 80 degrees. You should go around the island as the windward side is truly tropical and uncrowded. You can charter a boat about a mile at Kewalo Basin Harbor and fish deep sea and catch marlin, tuna, mahi mahi and other fish if you are into deep sea fishing or shore fish. There are a lot of things to do such as Polenesian Cultural Center, Pearl Harbor, etc. Each island is very different as I travel to the neighbor islands each week from Oahu for business. My favorite island is Kauai. I'm sure you will have a great time. Aloha!

Yeah. What i need is a hotel right on the beach at Waikiki ( Outrigger?), to where if my kids gets get bored they can just step outside their where theirs alot of things to do all in one place. Since is the first time for them going, I feel Ohau has the most things to do let alone since we all surf !!

Sorry to drudge up an old thread, but I lived in Hawaii during my first year of school, and lived right above Diamond Head.

It seems like slkca grabbed a bunch of my favorite spots. I second Sandies and Makapu'u (For a fun day, grab a bus out there). I would probably discourage Hanauma Bay. There's a TON of dead coral out there and it's kind of sad. I think for the money, you could probably do an excursion.

One of the fun places was the Dole Cannery are, which is just outside of Waikiki. Go there for a movie in the evening, then hang out for some drinks. Also, if you're there on a weekend, make sure you hit up the swap meet at Aloha Stadium Smile

Yessssss, the Outrigger is great. I stayed in the Outrigger 2 weeks. Had the best time of my life there. To what slkca said I can only add you have to try the surfing. I was a beginner and Waikiki is great for beginner surfers. The waves start breaking wayyyyyyyyy out...nice long ride in.

Oh, if either your 16 and 18 yr olds are girls, keep an eye on 'em. The guys on waikiki just waiting for new tourists will swoop down like hawks if you don't.

The food is incredibly good. The MaiTais are awesome. Sunsets are like none you'll ever see again. You will love it.
