These bourbons cost about the same--$28-30. Any resemblence stops there.

First is Basil Hayden. If you like your bourbon already watered down, this is it. Very little flavor on first contact and no finish. I am saving it for company who may not know the difference.

Second is something new(in Houston). Old Forrester Birthday Bourbon. Distilled and barrelled in 1990, this was bottled in 1993. It is a bourbon which should be on Bloof's list near the top. A very complex, fruity, even somewhat perfumish, drink which gives many flavors over its mouthtime and which has a very long finish.

There will be no more of the Old Forrester(acording to its tag) after this is gone. I have secured several cases and will be enjoying it for a long time. If available in your area, try it. A most pleasant surprise from one of the big names.

I regularly drink both old forrester and basil haydens but I completely disagree with you.

I got an email reply from Brown-Forman today. The "Birthday Bourbon" was released on Sept. 2, this year. Some distributors are said to be holding it for the Christmas season.

Bug your retailer if they have not got it on the shelf yet. It is worth it.

oh, I see, the bourbon you are referring to is a new blend. That figures because the original old forrester, although a great drink for the price, cannot hold a candle to basily haydens IMO.

I bought a bottle of Basil and tried a glass last night. I enjoyed it. Slightly honeyed, smokey, but not a whole lot of depth.

Not too shabby though.
