Went out to Durango, CO last week. Always enjoy browsing thru wine shops, so stopped into one near our hotel. They had a very nice selection, but it was their "odds & ends" bin really got my attention. Mixed in with some low end wines were 4 bottles of 1983 Fonseca vintage port & 2 bottles of 1980 Taylor Fladgate vintage port- for $48.25 each! Either they were mispriced or had been sleeping in that store since the 1980s. Of course, I grabbed them. Sometimes you get lucky. And yes, I opened a bottle of Fonseca. Well preserved & delicious.

Great find! I am constantly on the lookout for gems like that. About the best I did was to find a bunch of bottles of blantons on sale at a store that was discontinuing it. I think they were like 25 bucks each. Problem is, I drank them twice as fast.

And no need for debate, like the Party P2s, on if it's too young for immediate consumption.

I tried my first bottle of Port (ClockTower from Australia) and couldn't finish the glass I poured. Way too sweet! Is this how all Ports are?

All port is pretty sweet. If you don't like sweet, you won't like port. Clocktower is a bargain. Doesn't have the depth of a Portugese vintage port, but for the money, you can't go wrong.

Clocktower is good stuff. I find it less sweet and raisiny than some other cheap ports. Bin 27, for example, is also touted as a good cheap port but Its too sweet to me.

I find Ruby ports to be sweeter than Tawnys - may wanna try the Tawny before swearing off Port entirely.
As far as the more affordable stuff - I like Warre's Warrior over the Bin 27. Recently picked up a bottle of "Hardy's Whiskers Blake" tawny (Australian), highly recommended by the guy at Total Wine - haven't tried it yet...
