Ok I've been playing around in the scotch playground now for a little over a year. I started with a bottle of JW Green and after that I tried a Black but didn't think it was nearly as good.

Then a buddy of mine got a bottle of Macallan's 12 year that we are hooked on.

I really like this one more than both the JW's but my question is, I was in Total Wine the other day looking at their pretty good selection and I wondered "Is there anything out there at a little better price that would be comparable to Macallan's 12?" Obviously I can't answer it myself and I don't want to be 'sold' something by their people so I pose it to you.

All that I really know is apparently I like single malt, and I think it is from Speyside....Let me know.

Glenlivet 12 will be a bit less, however we are only talking $5-$10 and probably not worth it for price diference.
McCallan 12 is a nice scotch for the price.
Just my .02
Try an airplane bottle as a test.

You would probably like the highland park 12 year as well. In chicago it was about 10$ cheaper per bottle. In PA (where I live now) alcohol is impossible to find. I dont understand the laws here at all...

I would recommend Highland Park 12 or Balvenie Doublewood. Although Balvenie is about the same price as Macallan.

Since this was his original question:

"Is there anything out there at a little better price that would be comparable to Macallan's 12?"

I wouldn't recommend Lagavulin, and it's one of my favorite single malts.

Scotch is a matter of taste. There is Islay, Highland, Lowland, Oban and others like The Glenlivit. then there are blends.(JW)

You really need to rey a few different types of Scotch.

Personally I like Islay malts (Lagavulin, Bowmore).

Chipster: none of the scotches mentioned so far are sherry cask finish except the Balvenie Doublewood. If you want something similar in flavor to the Mac 12 you would need to buy or try a scotch that is a sherry cask finish such as Glenmorangie La Santa, Glenfiddich 15 year, something along those lines.American oak nor French oak, nor Islays nor the non-peated Speysides will give you the same flavor profile if that is indeed your question.

ditto but add to this Talisker

"Cuban seed tobaccos grown in Nicaragua and Cuba. The wrapper would be from Cuba. The binder leaves would be from Nicaragua. For the ligero tobacco in the filler, he would use two types, one from Esteli and the other from Jalapa in Nicaragua. The other filler components, seco and viso, would come from Cuba, the former from Villa Clara, the latter from Pinar del Rio. That Cigar, he says with pride, would score 100 points."

Macallens 12 is awesome. I would love to try the 25 year old stuff. They have some down at the remomos by where I live, but I haven't gotten around to trying it. Has anyone had it and is it as good if not a hell of a lot better than the 12?
