I have a friend who is going to Jamaica for the holidays and he asked me what I wanted him to bring back. I told him to bring back a box of Cohibas or Montecristos of course. I also told him to look for some good rum to bring back. What are some really good Cuban Rums on the market?? Nothing too expensive please

Appleton is good. Personally I like Pusser's British Navy Rum because I got hooked on it sailing in the BVI years ago... and you can splice the main brace with one of the traditional British Navy toasts:
Monday: "Our ships at sea."
Tuesday: "Our men."
Wednesday: "Ourselves (as no one is likely to concern themselves with our welfare)."
Thursday: "A bloody war and quick promotion."
Friday: "A willing soul and sea room."
Saturday: "Sweethearts and wives... may they never meet."
since i'm smoking a monte 2 with rum as i type i am going to give a bit of due to bacardi.
the stuff is ubiquitous and produced in lord knows how many franchised countries but they have actually released a product worthy of a majour brand. and that is bacardi eight year old reserve. this is produced in the bacardi 'home' of bahamas and is as smooth a rum as i have found. if you a going to go global then you really should have a marque that you are proud to call your own and with the 8 year old i think that bacardi have finally showed me that they can produce.

Gossling Black Seal is one of my favorite's too. My favorite Cuban rum is Varadero Club 7 anos, but it's rarely found outside Cuba. Havana Club 7 would be a good choice too.
I have a colleague who owns property in Cuba and goes back and forth every 4 or 6 weeks. He said that Havana Club has an 18 year rum available in Cuba. That is a bottle I want to sample!

Anyone else try it?
I've had it in Cuba. Insanely expensive and IMHO, not much better than the 7 anos.
I had some 7 yr old Havana Club last night. It was very good, smooth. Another to try is the Nicaraguan Flor De Cana. Their 4 yr old is superb, about 15 bucks a fifth.
We had Flor de Cana at our club a couple of months ago and sampled the 4, 7, 12, 15 and 18 yr old.
I enjoy Havana Club anejo reserva. Very nice sipping rum. Lots a floral notes and the taste of molasses and clove are distinct. Sipping this rum with a Coranado by Litto Gomez, La Flor dominicana is a perfect after dinner match.
Varedero 7 year - nice, some prefer this over the Havana Club 7 year but I found that Havana Club was smoother.
Caney Anejo - not sure of age, but a dark bottle and similar to the varadero and HC 7 year so is probably on a par in the age stakes. I preferred it to Varadero and, while not as smooth as the HC 7 it was more interesting on my palette.
Havana club barrel select/proof - I may have been a bit jaded but I found this slightly harsher than the straight aged variety.
Santiago de cuba 11 year- as close as i got to the more pricey rums. very rich, dense and felt like a quality spirit.
I agree with most of the posts in this thread. I love Appleton Extra and Reserve. Flor de cana is also an excellant rum for the price. As far as Cuban rum goes, I like the 7 year but the anejo reserva usually does the trick. I would also like to note Matusalem as being a superb rum although it has not been made in Cuba since the revolution.

Matusalem was made in Cuba until a few years ago. I bought a bottle in Moron, Cuba in 2003.

According to their website the brand ceased to exist in Cuba after the revolution. Maybe there is dual name usage. I have never tried Cuban Matusalem, only the Dominican brand.
