I've never been a fan of rum, until I tried Flor de Cana rums, even the younger bottles are incredibly smooth and tasty...

This is the best sipping rum I've ever had.

Old topic, I know, but I had to chime in. I'm a huge fan of rum and love to talk about it.

My favorite by far, Ron del Barilito 3 Star. Has a delicious maple syrup, honey, oak flavor, very smooth, goes down like water for me. Puerto Rican rum in general is my favorite, I find it smoother and easier to drink than the rest.

Ron Zacapa is a bit too sweet for me some of the time, just right at others, depends on my mood.

El Dorado is definitely a good rum, I think mine is 15 yrs (bottle is downstairs), but don't hold me to it.

Cruzan Single Barrel Estate and Mt. Gay Extra Old are excellent 'bargain' rums. For the money, you can't beat them.

Cruzan Estate Dark (2 yr) is my favorite 'all-purpose' rum. Almost as good as the single barrel estate, but even more affordable.

The Rhum Vieux Agricole from Martinique definitely has a distinctive taste. It reminds me a little of Scotch (though I don't drink much of that stuff). Also a little more floral, less fruity, less sweet, and obviously no molasses-character.

Appleton is also a good brand. I used the Extra Old as my 'default' rum until it ran low.

The Plantation line has some nice finds too. Plantation Jamaica is a 'kick you in the face' kind of rum. It's harsh, but in a good way I think, like Booker Noe Bourbon. Plantation Trinidad 1991 is harsher still, I haven't decided if I like that one yet or not.

The Captain Morgan Tattoo is terrible, avoid it at all costs. Tastes like cough syrup. I bought a 50 mL bottle, almost couldn't finish it. Regular Captain Morgan Spiced isn't too bad, I like that in coke.

For black rum, I prefer Gosling's Black Seal over Myers. No contest in my opinion.

Haven't had much white rum, so I've got no comment on that front.

Also a general note - Most all rum is made from molasses. That doesn't make it bad, so please don't discriminate on that account alone.

That should do it, hope this helps!

I have to agree with Mark. I like Goslings myself and will even have it on the rocks.

For mixing, anyone try Pusser's Navy Rum? Strong but a good base.

I'm a loyal fan of HC-7. I know it may not be the best rum out there, but it has a flavor profile unmatched by any other rum I have ever tasted.
Next favorite would have to be Zacapa.

BTW, has anyone ever tried the dark rum made in New Orleans. N.O. Rum? I have, but it tastes too much like bananas Foster to me, too sweet.
