A silver (not sure of age but less than 3 years) A 3 year (perfect straw color for mojitos) A 5 year A 7 year A Barrel Proof (not sure, 5, 7 year maybe more) And a 15 year ...
A few weeks back, I was at this Cuban bar/restaurant in Denver. My wife and I were well into our third Mojito when I noticed they had a little humidor in back complete with a box of Hemingway Signatures. Yeah, I paid a premium for it, but the combination of the smoke and rum and sugar cane and samba music was the closest I've come to nirvana in a long time.
Even though the cigars seemed to be sort of an afterthought at this joint, the waitress nonetheless did a whole Japanese tea-ceremony ritual about the lighting: she poured some liquor into an upside down martini glass, then lit it, leaving a small olympic torch for me to use when sparking the Signature up. Very classy touch, that, if a bit unnecessary.

I've been to Martinique a couple times. Clement Vieux rum is excellent. Haven't seen it in the states. Leaving for Bermuda Sunday, so will have a chance to try Gossling's reserve rum. Their regular is pretty tasty, so curious about the reserve.
Although I've tried many, big name and not, I have yet to enjoy any more than that fine Nicaraguan Flor de Cana Centennario 12yr. Smooth- robustly flavorful, complex and almost like a cognac for sipping long and slow on the rocks with a good smoke. Expensive stuff, too, about $13/bottle at Nicaraguan supermarkets. Don't see itmuch iun the US though. Pmag

I like an unusual rum from Bermuda. It is called Goslings Black Seal. Its dark with a definate hint of molasses. I mix it with ginger beer for a Bermudian "Dark and Stormy" or even sip it on the rocks. It compliments a dark maduro cigar quite nicely.
Cheers

My favorite rum is the Barbancourt 8yr. that's rumored to be Jimmy Buffet's favorite too.......can't be all bad. I buy it by the case. Go to drink is quarter lime squeezed into a tall glass, healthy dose of rum and then ginger ale with crushed ice on top. Tastes a lot like a mojito IMO but a lot less fuss. Try it.......you'll like it.
I see (at least) two very distinctive types of rum. The smooth Spanish/English rum type (they're quite similar), like Cuban or Jamaican Rum. In that category, I prefer the Havana Club 7 years. And then there's the French Antilles style rum, with a much more accentuated sugar cane taste. In that category, I prefer the J.M. 12 years from Martinique or the Trois Rivières (Three Rivers).

Although I no longer drink ( I abused the privilege), when I did drink it was...
Myers Dark, either on the rocks or with a splash of tonic. However, I don't recommend drinking a full litre in the hot, Wildwood, NJ sun, especially if you're a pale Irish guy like me!
And it only took another 4 years before I got some sense.
