I'm sure this is an old topic, but what the hay!

Best white wine for the buck:

Domain de Pouy 2001 - it's a French wine that will explode in your mouth. Fresh, tart and crisp with a slight oak influence, and very complex. You'll think, hey this is a great 20 dollar bottle of wine. Wrong! How about 6 bucks??

Best red wine for the buck:

Borsao (Spanish red) - woof! this one will smack you in the face. Fresh red fruits and a hit of tannin and equally complex as the Pouy. great value at 6 bucks as well!!

Both are on the dry side, just to let you know. Try them, you won't be sorry and feel free to contribute some of your faves as well to this thread.

I agree with the Borsao. That is a great Rioja.

Yellow Tail Shiraz
This is a new Australian wine. While I am not a wine drinker (my favorite drink is a single malt scotch) when I do drink wine this is my favorite bottle to buy. It is good and only $7.99. Matter of fact I am planning on going and drinking one with a Padron 5000 in a few moments. Try it-you should like it.

Been drinkin' this for a while here in ABQ. We can find it as low as $5.99 around town. I agree it is a killer deal at that - the Cab ain't too shabby either.... Big Grin

The Aussie's Penfolds line is a good buy as well, try their Koonunga Shiraz-Cabernet or the Penfolds 2000 Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz, slightly higher in price but still a great deal. Big Grin

If you like Bosaro, you may want to try Abadia Rivola for around $10. It has a bit more stuffing and balance. Also like Weinert Malbecs and Cavas de Weinert (Argentina) at similar price. These are truly high quality wines. Guigal and Jaboulet Cotes de Rhones are also great deals for $7-9. BTW, all taste great with steak and/or medium to full cigars. I probably drink 2-3 bottles per week of any of these wines on a regular basis.

There is a story that goes with 2buck chuck.

The wine buyer for Beverages and More contacted a winery in Sonoma and asked if he could make a 2 buck chuck style wine for them. The winery was unfamiliar with the name 2 buck chuck so the buyer explained. The winery said that it could not be done but he would look into how cheap he could make wine. He then researched the name 2 buck chuck and found that you can make wine that cheap and good. He searched a little further and found that the name 2buck chuck had no copywrite on it. He immediatly registered the name, made a 2 dollar bottle of wine and slapped a label on the bottle with a picture of 2 bucks standing on either side of a woodchuck.

So the next time you would like some 2 buck chuck it may be a little diffrent then the Charles Shaw that you were familiar with.

I did drink a bottle of it once; after a heavy Kerouac reading binge . . . I woke up in Mexico with a hooker and a midget named 'Steve' Eek

burnedmyfingers - I agree on the ravenswood but not their zin. I thought their shiraz was much much better than their zin. Wild horse zin is pretty good though for the same price IMO.

Charles Shaw - it's not terrible, but definitely not a sophisticated wine... At $2, it's easy to drink everyday and drown your sorrows.

Rosemount - I am a big fan of their Shiraz/Cabernet blend and their Traminer Riesling. These bad boys are about $7.

Ravenswood has a number of Zinfandels. Their Old Vine selections are exceptional.
I have about three cases in the cooler.

I was surprised by Papio Chardonnay. It's got funny looking monkeys on the label. At $4.60 a bottle, it's a bargain and quite nice. I couldn't even find it in a wine store...I had to buy it at a grocery store!

zdpin, i agree with you, i detect a certain "butt-ness" in the Yellow tail and most other Australian wines, the plants are just too young i think.

i'm trying to differentiate between a wine that is good for it's price and a wine that tastes a whole lot better than it actually costs... cuz there's a lot of $6 wines that taste LIKE $6 bottles of wine. Wink
