Going for work in a few weeks, just before Oktoberfest, unfortunately. I found Berlin to be a good cigar-friendly city, can I expect the same fromm Munich? Can you recommend any joints besides the Hoffbrauhaus (or whatever it's called)?

Too bad you won't be there for Oktoberfest...I certainly will! Munich is a big, friendly city. Been there a few times and absolutely love it. Smoker friendly, and lots to see and do. I cannot off hand recommend any bars etc..but the Bavarians love the beer gardens, and the weather should be quite nice then. Find one, have a seat and enjoy! Remember, weisswurst, pretzels and weizenbier before 1100 am...tradition!
I've been to Munich before, a very beautiful city I must say. You would specially love the outdoor bars in places like the Marin Platz and Karls Platz.

Is there a particular hotel(s), area of town, and restaurants someone could recommend...I'm thinking of doing a European Delivery car purchase program next year that would put me in Munich towards the end of May. Good time of year?....appreciate suggestions.

I hope you will be able to find a place to smoke with all the new smoking law's being put into place here. I know three states in southren germany have started and the 13 left will begin doing so by years end.
Here is what I have read.
The thick fog of smoke at the corner bar is about as German as black leather pants or Kraftwerk. But anyone wanting to puff from one hand while drinking from the other will have to act soon. Most of Germany's 16 states are moving to implement public smoking bans by the end of the year.
The first three laws go into effect on Aug. 1 in Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The scope of the laws will differ in each state. In Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg, smoking will be banned in restaurants, bars, hospitals, schools and local authority buildings, while in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the ban will only be effective in the latter three kinds of institutions -- a ban on smoking in restaurants and bars will only come in at the start of 2008. . . .
In introducing bans, Germany is joining a wave of fresh, smoke-free air which is blowing across Europe. Among the countries to have introduced smoking bans in public places are Ireland, Scotland (more...), France (more...), Italy, and most recently Finland and England, which introduced bans on June 1 and July 1 respectively.
Guys, your posts give me nostalgia. It was one of the best vacations the one I had in Munich. I specially loved the bars in the forests around lakes and small rivers. The BBQ smell, the beer kegs, the whole atmosphere is just beautiful. Pity my grandfather sold the house he had there.

A hotel NOT to stay at or visit is the Hotel Orley. I stayed there when I was there a few years back and lets just say it was about a 2 star. But if you get a chance take a trip south to see the Castles of King Ludwig in the Alps. Majestic views and great beer.
