i'd like to also add that if anyone can list a rum that has some spice and slight sweetness that would be appreciated. I like bite but want something with those characteristics

Ron Zacapa Centenario Rum 23 year old for $40 a bottle nothing else even comes close. If your gonna spend $100 or so go with the Havana Reserve 15 yr IMHO.

For not so expensive sweeter tasting rums try Havana Club 7 year or Matusalem Classico. They are both decent for the money. My everyday rum is Havana Club anejo reserva of Appleton Reserve, good taste that won't break the bank. For a nice caramel taste you could go with Appleton Extra which goes for 35 bucks in my high tax region. For a great lighter coloured rum try 10 Cane, really nice for mojitos.

The best rum on the face of the earth is Pyrat Cask 23. Sipped from a snifter like a fine brandy, it's a blend of 40-year old rums aged in oak, rich, leaning towards sweetness with a pronounced element of molasses and burnt orange peel. It's smooth, without a hint of heat going down ... it's just breathtakingly good. Stunning. Don't even think about mixing it with anything, or adding ice.
Marketing by the same people that bring you Patron tequila, it's about $325 a bottle ($100 or so less on the island of Anguilla, where it's made). The Pyrat XO is a pretty close approximation at $35. 'Close' being relative, of course.

I agree with Jack, just the price is like a frik'n rectal exam. Many on-line reviews state hands down that the P23 is the best rum on the planet. If you can afford it, then go for the gold.
I tried the Pyrat XO and it is junk, too sweet and one dimensional.

You're just a bunch of s1ss1es, the best rum comes from the French Antilles. They have this very distinctive raw sugar cane taste and aroma...
My favorite is the JM, from Martinique. They have a vintage old rum, usually about 15 years old -- the last one I had was a 1992 -- which can really bring you to rum lover's heaven.

I have just tried the regular bottling Pyrat rum for the first time. High quality & very smooth, BUT with a distinct butterscotch aftertaste that I don't find appealing. But if you like butterscotch... it's a fine rum.
Personally, I find Gossling Black Seal to be an excellent & inexpensive rum. Smooth, on the sweeter side with a hint of molasses.
My favorite Cuban rum is Varadero Club 7 anos. A little sweeter than the Havana Club 7.
I just finished a glass of Havana Club 7. I used to like this a lot, now I find it a little rough with a nose of acetone, think nail polish remover. HC Barrel Proof however is very nice, very smooth. I must try to get another bottle, the one I'm half way through I got in Gibraltar last summer. It's a good place to get it, less than £10 for a litre bottle.

Forget those uppity super premium rhums - who the hell can afford them and who are you trying to impress! Hands down, my faves are the El Dorado 5 year from Guyana and the Ron Anejo Pampero Reserva from neighbouring Venezuela in the leather pouch. They are both great and highly affordable.

The category isn't "The Best Rum I Can Afford". Affordability isn't a factor is evaluating "The Best Rum". The best is the best. Period.
More importantly, poupon, I really resent your implication that I -- or anyone who agreed with me -- posted about the Pyrat Cask 23 because I'm trying to "impress" someone. I'm many, many years past needing to do that.
You forget those "uppity super premium rums". I'll continue to save my money and spend it for those rare indulgences that make life special.

Hey Jack - I am entitled to my opinion in the same way as you. I believe the readers to this post would like to know about other worldly appreciated and varied high quality rhums rather than read about the mutual appreciation society best choice awards.

Of course you are. I'm taking exception to your insinuation that my recommendation of Cask 23 was made simply to impress people. Not only do you have no basis for that, it made it personal. And unwarranted.
