Just read in the paper today that there is going to be a new guiness beer comming out in the UK market. On october 19 the new "brew 39" is going to be unveiled. Aparently its a lighter cleaner version of guinness. It is planed that after six months in the market it will be withdrawn and replaced by another new guiness beer. The people at guiness say that by 2010 there will 10 new versions of the original stout sold.
Now im no expert but this has gimmic all over it!!

lighter and cleaner? they must be talking about the extra stout, no? the regular draught is pretty light and clean already? must be aimed at new stout drinkers. very interesting though. i alway though the extra stout was a great place for them to imrove. the draught sells way to much to screw with the the extra stout could be refined a little...don't get me wrong i like it the way it is, but i'd like to see the people at Guinness use all that long standing know-how to improve on it.
how many versions out the stout or out there now? there has to be several recipes now? at least 4-5 for different markets...

i say leave well enough alone. Actually the stuff on draught is not a stout. Believe it or not, it's an ale. Brewed like any other ale. The reason that it is "black" is because they roast the malt before the brewing process.
Dude I think I'll blow a gasket if they start screwing with my guinness, for my money its the best beer to pair with a nice cigar... why mess with a good thing?

Doesn't sound like they are getting rid of the Guinness we all know and love. It sounds to me like they are making some new versions of it. I'm all for more Guiness to choose from. Maybe some flavored stouts. I like chocalate stout and would love a Guiness version. But if they do mess it up I've always got Murphy's wich in my opinion is better than Guiness. Three Cheers for new Beer. Cheers, Cheers, Cheers!
Come to think of it this isn't the first time Guiness screwed around with itself for marketing purposes. Anyone remember Guiness Extra Cold? Exact same Guiness served at a slighly colder temperature. It was around for maybe a month...
Extra cold can still be round over the pond. It was a marketing ploy to get NEW drinkers. Colder temps mute the flavors of all drinks...beer, wine, whisky. The idea was that if they can get first time drinkers to pick up the extra cold and as they appreciate fuller tasting beers like stouts they could move over to the regular draught.
same with whisky...most new comers to whisky start with 'on the rocks' as it mutes the intense flavor of whisky. eventually they'll move to 'a splash of water' as they begin to appreciate the nectar's flavor.
Guinness is actually a deep ruby color too...seriously. so deep its almost black, but still a very deep ruby. weird.
following a trend is dangerous and Guinness is making that mistake.

Yep, and that was a mistake the first time they did it, lucky for us.

aren't all stouts techically ales? using top fermented yeast? i could be wrong, but i thought stouts were ales with roasted malt. i haven't really studied the chemistry of beer but i thought beer was either lager or ale. let a brotha know...thanks

More or less, all beer falls into 2 catagories, ales and lagers. Lagers include pilseners, bocks and dopplebocks. Ales include porters, stouts, wheat beers and anything with ale in the name (ie pale ale). All beer is made with roasted malt, stouts just have their malt darker roasted to give more robust flavor.
