i have a pretty good idea of which scotches and bourbons i like with cigars, but i was curious about rums. i don't have a lot of rum experience. i have only tried captain morgan, bacardi and goslings. i liked goslings the best out of the three. there a few bars around me where i can smoke cigars. that being said, are there any darker rums that bars normally carry? i tend to smoke full-bodied cigars at the bars. i have used the find feature, but couldn't really find what i was looking for.

Me and another poster on this board like Flor de Cana a lot. That's the best rum I've hard. I've heard that Pyrat is also good, though.

Oh, and CA did a write-up on this already just so you know. Check that out.

I think Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Anos is a great pairing with cigars.

Well, from first hand experience Flor de Cana is a very, very good rum with cigars. The longer it's been aged, the better it gets (but also more expensive obviously)

I only have second hand knowledge of the Pyrat, but from that the XO is supposed to be a good darker rum.

I guess the availability at bars is dependent on where you go, but I've found the FdC to be pretty readily available.

Since he's from PA, that'd be illegal to purchase from a bar in the US.

The Flor de Cana 18 year old rum is terrific with a cigar, particularly a full bodied cigar.

Try the El Dorado 15 and 21 YO, especially the 21YO, pretty goes with any cigar.

Also the Appletons 21 YO is very nice. Bacardi 8 YO is good as well as Mount Gay Extra Old.

Sal, I've never had Cuban rum (or coffee for that matter) myself. I used to be under the impression that most of what cuban cigar smokers enjoyed was simply because of the forbidden fruit factor. Well, I know now that I was wrong. You having had cuban rum (and without it being forbidden) could probably speak more to its actual quality. What do you think? Is it better honestly?

Forbidden fruit be damned. HC is good stuff. The Anejo Reserva is my main drink. HC7 year is alright but I don't like it as much as most. If you can find anejo especial it is great as well. If you can't get any HC then Appleton Estate is a fantastic rum as well. Try the Extra on the rocks you can't go wrong. As previously mentioned Flor de Cana makes some good rum as well. Another choice is Brugal Extra viejo. This is fantastic rum as well with a VERY musty flavour.

Rum has become my favorite lately, but I'm an equal opportunity inebriator... with the exception of tequila. I just can't do that. I don't care how nice it is. I just can't do tequila.

I quite like the Ron Matusalem Gran Reserve for a spicy rum or the 10 cane rum for a sweet one.

Aged rum and cigars are the spice of life....

If you can get it , Havana Club Anejo as mentioned above is a fantastic sipping Rum to pair with a cigar.
I also agree on the Brugal. A Dominican Rum that is very musty, good call JWEB, but is great with a full bodied smoke.
Also, you cannot go wrong with Barcardi 8. I love this Rum. Very floral and candied and is great with a lighter bodied smoke.
Of course all of these are dark Rum's in which I drink strait up or on the rocks.
