Hey everyone, I'm heading to Italy for my honeymoon on August 3rd. We're planning on staying for around 10 days, and would like to hit Rome, Florence, Sorrento, and the Island of Capri. (thinking about flying into Rome, and doing the Eurail from there)
I'm tired of reading books about it, I want to know if you've been here, (1) restaurants that I should not miss, (2) events/activities that I should not miss, and really any help ya'll can offer concerning general advice/suggestions!
If you are in Rome these restaurants are the best not only in Rome but the world.

I frequent joia every time i am in Rome and want dinner and dance. If you want romance and a wonderful view check out Les Etoiles As far as the list of things to do 10 days is really not enough time to be honest you would need 10 months. Check out Venice,St Marks square,The Col ism in Rome.Leaning tower of Pisa all of these are must do tourist events in Italy. Enjoy your trip. Ciao Don

Florence is a stunning city. I went to Capri about 5 years ago and while it was nice I found it extremely expensive, a year later I visited an island just North-West of Capri called Ischia which I found to be amazing, have been back twice since and would recommend it to anyone travelling to Italy.

How far away from Capri was it? I have heard Capri is expensive, we were thinking about maybe just going over for the day and relaxing and taking in some of the sites (probably staying in Sorrento and taking the ferry). What is the make-up of Ischia (restaurants, nightlife, etc.) does it have enough for us to do for a whole day, or more of an island for beach recreation?

Holy cow! Thanks for the heads up. I know that 10 days isn't even close--we joke that if we don't see some stuff that will just give us more of a reason to go back =). What are the general costs for these places? Since I have never been there, I would hate to stroll in with less money than needed. Did you find that there were dress codes that we will need to consider when packing? My fiance will LOVE the dinner and dancing idea!

You are going to get hit over the head exchanging Dollars for Euro's best to use your credit cards.I always wear a Jacket to dinner so i really don't pay much attention to the codes.I have seen people dressed casual but neat.All the contact info is there always call ahead or go to the Web site whats not expensive for me might be too much for you i don't know your budget.Enjoy your trip glad i could help. I'd guess at about 20km from Capri, if your travelling the best option is to get a boat from Naples (though I would recommend keeping your time in Naples as brief as possible). Theres plenty to do there, the beaches are fantastic and the nightlife is great too. For more info check out http://wikitravel.org/en/Ischia

There are so many things to see in Italy that you need maybe 6 months to have a sneak peek at everything (of which maybe 2 months in Rome alone). I've done a 2-week marathon which left me wanting more. Other than what's already been mentioned, I loved Sicily and Milan. And Venice just makes you keep your eyes and mouth wide open almost any minute you're there...

Sheep, maybe you can comment on this better than I can, but I seem to remember a lot of places shutting down during August.
Also, as to dress code, I personally would wear a jacket - something light as it's going to be hot. I think a tie is preferable to no tie, but in the summer I don't think anyone will hold you to that. Sheep?

Florence is great. I might also suggest you consider staying in the Italian Lake District; Lugano and Como are beautiful places.
In Florence, make sure to eat at Coco Lezzone. I recommend the Pork Steak stuffed with rosemary and the asparagus if it is in season.
I would also recommend that you not try to go so many places in such a short time. I honeymooned for a month in Europe and we went to four cities. Spending a day or two, constantly moving, won't be much fun if you really want to get a sense of what the city is like. Slow down, relax, have fun . . .
And don't go to Europe in August.

That was exactly what I did before I started grad school. If you remind me by email, I can write up a ton of stuff. I studied in Europe last year too... It would really probably be too long for this thread to type it all up. Email's in profile, though.

Sheep, maybe you can comment on this better than I can, but I seem to remember a lot of places shutting down during August.
This is very true Scott many take there vacations at that time. They take advantage of the break kids have from school.Also it is hot and many take long lunch breaks as well.Some business even close for a couple of hours when its really hot and open up later when it cools down.This is common throughout Europe at this time of year.

Yes and No the upscaled places always have a jacket to lend you so its not a big deal.

Venice is not the hoards at San Marco Plaza but the quiet, lazy canals that you have to walk a bit to find. It's a nice place for a few days, especially on a honeymoon.

Everyone the tips are amazing thank you so much! I am in the middle of my law finals so I haven't been on much, but I (and the wife to be) are taking notes and looking at all the links ya'll are giving us, and it is only adding to the excitement.
I checked out your blog. Fascinating stuff. You and your wife have been to many, many places. I particularly enjoyed your essays on New York. I lived there for many years and it was interesting to see it from a tourist's perspective.
