do you have any idea what he drinks ?? knowing what he drinks can help us give you recommendations based on what he likes..

There are different regions in Scotland, where each region produces a very distinct type of whiskey when compared to the other regions

so Knowing if he’s into the highlands, the speyside, islay, etc… would help.

Also, what's your budget ?? as good scotch can be had for anywhere between 30$ and well over 1000$

if he likes peated malts, for me lagavulin 16 years is the king. I don't like highlands malts very much, I do like speyside though and I recommend Glenlivet. But as Salibas said, it all depends on taste and budget, I am just suggesting two of my favourite easy to find and not very expensive.

A couple others are Arran and Isle of Jura, they are both made on islands but are not very peated (smokey).

Well I have gotten the Isle of Jura for him before plus the Glenfidditch (spelling?). My wife heard of a bottle called Lagavulin. Has anyone tried it?

Thanks for the help.

I haven't tried it yet, but as a Scotch noob, that is one I am looking forward to the most. I actually have it on my shelf, just haven't openned it yet. Here is a website I used when trying to decide what I want to get: http://www.attitude.com/users/charles/maltwhiskey/default3.htm

There's a section "Favorite Malts" that might be of help when picking out a gift.

Thanks again Bo for the help. Looks like we might give Lagavulin 16-year a try. Might be a good paring with that and a Cohiba Maduro 5. He's a scotch and full bodied cigar smoker, when he has time. Smile

Without knowing what he prefers I would avoid Islay (peated malts). Knowing he is a huge fan stick to single malt, not blended. Otherwise I would say you really can't go wrong with Macallan. The 12 year is about $45 per bottle and the 18 is something like $150. There are lots of choices, but to me that is both safe and high quality. Some may say overpriced tho.

if you are to go to the $150 region and he likes peated malts, nothing better than the Lagavulin 18 years. I have a couple of bottles, my special occasion malt. as I said, another more inexpensive choice is the 16 year old.

I love my father-in-law but I don't see us spending anything close to $150 a bottle.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Good to know. In that case I still maintain you cannot go wrong with Macallan 12 at around $45 per bottle. I think Aberlour (forget if its 10 or 12 year) is quite good and thats even less, around $30. I have been meaning to try out Tomintoul which was on the CA main page a few weeks ago. Been meaning to try it. 10 year old is $35 and 16 for $55.

cheapo!!!! Wink if he liked Isle of Jura, go for Arran. I am at the UK, I am not sure how much malts retail in the US, it is 25 pounds here, around 50 dollars. The 10 year old Lagavulin should be about the same, I quite like it.

Personally, my favorite Scotch right now is the Macallan 10-year-old Fine Oak. It runs about $35 a bottle, and is simply delicious. I actually prefer it over the Sherry Oak line...
