Today the Big Brown Truck brought me my packet for the Big Smoke in Las Vegas. Included is a sheet advising that new non-smoking rules in Las Vegas prohibit smoking outside the auditorium where the evening programs are held. No smoking during the "smokers breakfast" or during the lunches, nor in line watiing to get into the auditorium!
I'm not upset enough to back out as we are going to Las Vegas that week anyway, but DAMN! Shanken and company should have told us this during the promotion stage, not in a mailer coming with the packet. They do repeat their refund policy, but I suspect most of us have already set our travel and lodging arrangements up.
I still expect to have a great time, but some of the "glitter" is off...

Frankly, not having smoke around while actually enjoying lunch & breakfast is OK with me--I can see some logistical issues with moving back and forth BT a "smoking room" and "eating room"--but I'm sure the good folks at CA have got it figured out. The more important question is--how does it affect the Big Smoke evenings where food is also served? If no changes there, then I suspect the new policy is meant to satisfy the concern about second-hand smoke for the hotel staff-- Just MHO--

Originally posted by MRM: The rules were the same last year when it held the Big Smoke in Vegas. This is all due to Nevada's smoking ban passed by voters in 2006.
The ban has been extensively covered in this Web site, including its effect on the Big Smoke.
In many states, you cannot smoke at private functions, so be glad they can even hold the event there at all.

The smoking NAZI'S are alive and well. Imagine not being able to smoke at this event. The Liberal's are protecting you it's all for your own good even at the price of your freedoms. You might want to remember that in November.

There's a compelling interest in the regulation of smoking...I would rather liken it, if you're going to use offensive labels, to our being "FASCIST SMOKERS" who expect our right to smoke to reign supreme over the rights of others to breath clean air.
It's one thing for we who smoke cigars to expect to be able to exercise our right to smoke; however, the right to smoke must be balanced against the right NOT to smoke, coupled with the right to be able to move and live freely in an environment that is not tainted by smoke. Do you not respect the rights of others, who may be non-smokers? You who would impose YOUR personal standards upon others and expect them to suck it up, well, just because you want to smoke? And you call them, "NAZI'S"?
It's interesting that you quote Jefferson and make references to freedom, yet you do NOT recognize, nor can you, the rights and freedoms of others.
You can smoke...just not wherever the hell you please. That's a very small concession when you consider that there are other people who exist in the world (perhaps that's a stretch for you, I realize). You are quite fond of calling others, "Nazi's" in many posts. But considering your perspective on things, that's pure hypocrisy because you want to impose YOUR view and YOUR perspective upon others, and anyone who disagrees is simply a "Nazi". Pretty Fascist of you.
This is something to remember in November, because it's not a "liberal" issue it's a human one.

Is it possible for the two of you to stop your pissing contest for the sake of others on this forum? It's draining to read the back and forth bickering. Who's gonna be the bigger person and simply ignore the other?

As soon as I see you two comparing sizes, I pretty much click out of the thread...
If you can't get along... fine... but take it to private messages or something... please...

OK guys, knock it off. I am infrequent poster here, and started this thread to vent a bit on my first ever Big Smoke and the rules in LV and the anti-smoking rules in LV that I was honestly unaware of. That it has turned into a vehicle for some pissing match between members has put me off on the Forums.
Clean it up!

...I certainly see your point. For myself, Vegas was always the one place where one could "get ill with it" and leave all BS behind (at least for a while anyways).
