As my Subscription for the year comes to an end I was looking at renewing for another year. I was looking at the little inserts in the magazine that say Save 50% off the newstand price. Reading the small print it says its only valid in the States. It states that the price for Cdn subscriptions is $38 in US funds. That is more then what I would pay at the newstand when you figure in the currency exchange at roughly 25%. I know its conveiniant to have it delivered but why would anyone pay more then they have to? I want to renew but if it means me saving money by picking it up myself then I will do that David Halifax NS

Probably due to the costs of shipping to Canada from the U.S. The postal regulations also might specify some kind of tax or import duty in addition to the increased shipping costs.
Remember, CA is printed in the US and benefits from bulk rate discounts from the US Postal Service that probably don't apply to the much smaller subscriber base served by Canada Post.
Of course, it could also be that CA uses a third-party in Canada, shipping the magazines in bulk and then having them mailed out by the local agent, which charges a fee. For instance, I pay about $12 an issue for BBC Top Gear magazine because it is shipped from England to the US, re-barcoded and then distributed by someone within the US.

Perhaps so but on the other hand i believe that there is also a very loyal readership amongst us and we could use a break once in a while.Keep in mind that we already pay through the nose with the purchase of our beloved hobby, namely"Cigars"

I don't see how that could happen without CA losing money. Their profit margin is the same whether the product is sold in the US or exported. The only way to give you a break would be to lose money. Their margin probably isn't very big on the subscriptions.
As far as already paying through the nose, that's not CA's fault, it's the Canadian government's, so you can't blame them.
Posted May 04, 2009 07:38 PM Hide Post Off topic a little, but after many years, I will NOT be renewing my subscription to Marvin R. Shanken's 'Golf' Aficionado this year.
I'm getting really tired of his self-promotion and looking at pictures of him in his own rag.
I think your making a big mistake. Look at the charity events he promotes. most recently one to help Autistic kids. I always look at things like that. I can spend my money anywhere i like that is your choice as well. I like to spend it in places where people give something back. Like Mr Shanken does IMHO people like him make a difference.
