I was wondering what some of you do to identify how long a cigar has been in your humidor. I understand puting a date on a box - but what if you are storing individuals - rings only? - Date the back of the ring?

Thanks
Gary

one easy way to do this is to order blank cigar bands and write down the date and put it around the cigar. You can order them here http://www.cigarmony.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=259

Use a fine Sharpie marker and impring the number on the cap.

That gets cut off anyway.

I like Doc's idea for singles.

I tend to keep all of my cigars in Coolerdor-type containers and I rarely buy less than a handful of any one cigar so I just write the date purchased on individual ziploc bags the store gives them to me in.

Cut it open and count the rings. Oh wait, that's a tree.

When I got one of my PIF I saw dates written on the bands. I started doing this, with a pen...just write the date on the band, where it would fit.

Now I just use Cigar Register.

It takes a while to download but its a good program, except there are alot of cigars you still have to add.

I'm getting ready to download cigar register as well...just to see if it will be easier than Excel...but the good thing with Excel is if i want to make a trade with somebody i just send them the list of my inventory in an spreadsheet and then they can tell me what looks good....i think i'll keep both up to date

For my boxes I just write the month/year inside the lid, and sometimes price. I really don't have singles I'm aging, just keeping for a special occasion. I feel that if I want to go through the trouble to age a cigar, I might as well age a box.

Heck, the only "real" single cigar I'm holding onto is a 77 shark with a Cameroon wrapper. Everything else is replaceable for the most part.

I've been using cigar register also. It surely isn't perfect, but is a great start towards organizing all of my cigars. For those interested, it also allows you to track the temperature and humidity in a humidor.

Like other users said, though, there are still a lot of cigars that need to be added to the database.

Nice ideas here. I always try to write the date on the bottom of any box of cigars that I receive. Never thought of documenting singles.

From all this discussion I assume that NCs don't have date codes on the box? Whyever not?You learn something new every day.

Pepin Garcia dates his boxes.
As for the others, who knows why not, you would think it would add instant value.
A date on a box gives an impression of "vintage".
