...and when will it be done?

I posted a reply last night on the NCAA Tourney questions thread on Cigar Talk and got a notice that I'd met some criteria for review. All I did was talk about basketball and my son's soccer game. I had one expletive in there, but I only used one letter of the word.

Can you at least tell me what was wrong?

I was censored last week because I posted what I cooked for dinner. New York strip smothered with sauted shi take mushrooms. Except shi take was one word like it's supposed to be.

I think maybe if you get a permission slip signed by your mommy faxed to Dave, they let you use words sometimes spoken by grown ups.

Nah, I typed an expletive but only used the first letter followed by ***....it was the word for what I wish I was doing now instead of working! Wink

It's still not posted, and I still have no answer.

I'm a little confused on CA's standards here. CA is an adult magazine, read by adults. The same goes for this board as well. However, there's nothing stopping an underage child from looking at either the magazine or reading the forum (except there's more of a registration process to get in the forum).

Then why is it ok to publish a picture of a half-naked woman in the mag, but you can't use bad words in the forum. I find it very puzzling.

CA, do you have different standards?

The censoring software is in place to try to maintain a civil tone on the boards. It's one thing to read a magazine story where the writer quotes a person saying "that cigar was $%**& lovely" and quite another to have a board where one member calls the other a $&^%.

David,

I agree with you and wouldn't use profanity that way here.

I think if you'll read my post, you'll see there was no harm in what I wrote. I could have said it differently, but there was no harm.

Please let me know if it's going to be allowed or not. If not, I'd appreciate an email or something as to why. Not to argue, just so I'll know.

Thanks!

I agree with you. The boards, a less controlled environment, should remain civil. However, I don't think the censoring software is the right mechanism. People can still get flammed (look what happens when someone asks a question asked before). In addition, there are ways around the sh1tty software.

Several people have mentioned appointed monitors for the board. Have you thought of that approach?

Maybe the software doesn't like mushrooms? Mushrooms give it gas.

Maybe it's because you talked about soccer. I would have banned you. Smile

Mike

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
John Stuart Mill

I think you should get rid of the software. There are never more than a half page of posts on any of the boards any give day of the week. There are message boards I subscribe to that get 8-10 pages of replies (as in a few thousand) everday and they are still moderated 'by hand'.

It would be a very easy task to have an admin moderate this board, they would have to check it 2 or 3 times a day max, and just make a mark in posts they are editing. If none of the CA people feel up to it, I'll nominate myself (I'll even do it for free Wink).

My post still isn't up, and I still don't have a real answer from admin...not knocking your reply, David, but that was just your cut and paste response. I don't think you'd actually read my post at that time.

I don't understand why admin. takes so long to answer simple questions. You've got employees assigned to this site. It shouldn't be like this.

You really need volunteer moderators. I've done it before (as have others here). It's free and easy.

And you guys know which people would do it right and which ones wouldn't.

I agree with everyone else here. You should have forum moderators taking care of this on a daily basis. Having had my own sites on and off for years, its very easy to ask a valued and respected member to act as moderator, say one moderator per forum, to keep it clean and modify or delete posts as required as long as the member who has their post modified is notified via email as to why it was done. Just a suggestion so you won't have to rely on software that doesn't do the job correctly.

MCDavis..........didn't you say that the expletive you used only used the first letter???????? If so, take a look at "The man from Nantucket" thread somebody bumped to the top yesterday. That thread has so many examples of what you did that a human moderator would stay employed for a month just cleaning that one up....... Eek Eek

I moderate on two other boards. It ain't brain surgery. Suggestions such as a member moderated board falls on deaf ears here. I personally know of about 200 or so people that were regulars here, that will have noting to do with this place. Anybody that's been here more than a year and a half can attest to that. Admin ran this place into the ground. This place has been stale and stagnent for a while. Two years ago, the Cigar Talk board would be at least three pages long for a single day. Not anymore.

I haven't been here that long, but I agree with Wacco. This board is incredibly slow compared to others.

But I love so many of you I can't go away. Plus the CC Fog's think I'm a troll and I hate to disappoint them by leaving entirely.

Peace.

Hey MC...the Administrator must be a UCONN fan (since you've revealed yourself as a NC State fan) which defeated the defending national champion Huskies!!!

Repost without the expletive -- if it was deemed unneceassary for the comment it was deleted. There are a lot of posted that get flagged and sometimes its one or two words that set it off -- we don't get all of them but we try. Make it easy for us and try to limit the expletives -- if you don't use them the post will more often times then not go up without skipping a beat.
