I was wondering what some of you do to identify how long a cigar has been in your humidor. I understand puting a date on a box - but what if you are storing individuals - rings only? - Date the back of the ring?
i have an excel template that i note the brand and line of cigar as well as the size and then also when i received it...or if it's a CC then i'll get teh box code and note that...

I tend to keep all of my cigars in Coolerdor-type containers and I rarely buy less than a handful of any one cigar so I just write the date purchased on individual ziploc bags the store gives them to me in.
I'm getting ready to download cigar register as well...just to see if it will be easier than Excel...but the good thing with Excel is if i want to make a trade with somebody i just send them the list of my inventory in an spreadsheet and then they can tell me what looks good....i think i'll keep both up to date

For my boxes I just write the month/year inside the lid, and sometimes price. I really don't have singles I'm aging, just keeping for a special occasion. I feel that if I want to go through the trouble to age a cigar, I might as well age a box.
Heck, the only "real" single cigar I'm holding onto is a 77 shark with a Cameroon wrapper. Everything else is replaceable for the most part.

I've been using cigar register also. It surely isn't perfect, but is a great start towards organizing all of my cigars. For those interested, it also allows you to track the temperature and humidity in a humidor.
Like other users said, though, there are still a lot of cigars that need to be added to the database.

Pepin Garcia dates his boxes. As for the others, who knows why not, you would think it would add instant value. A date on a box gives an impression of "vintage".
