I just recently saw Oceans 12 and was glad to see Andy Garcia and Elliot Gould have a cigar in every scene in this movie. Mr. Garcia was even smoking one during the Barbara Walters interview with the cast(from the expression on her face, she wasn't pleased)

I have 4 questions about the cigars in the movie:
1) What kind are they?
2) What country are they from? (Mr. Garcia being Cuban, after all and filmed in Europe)
3) Who supplies them?
4) How many did they consume?

Actually, I have a fifth question. From my experience years ago as an actor, I know they shoot an incredible number of takes to get 1 minute of film and continuity dictates that items like cigars, cigarettes, etc... be exactly the same size in every take, the number they consumed can be enormous.

The 5th question is: Did they ever get overwhelmed, sick or lose their joy for cigars?

Hey, Pal, where've you been? And what did you act in -- anything we've seen? Are you the guy that played Eddie Haskell and then joined the LAPD to harass smartasses like the character he played? Big Grin

I honestly don't know what type of cigar(s) Andy Garcia and Elliot Gould smoked in Oceans 12, but I'm happy that the movie was so cigar friendly. Garcia is a serious aficionado, and has been on our cover and is on our home page as I type. (He attended the Casa Fuente opening.)

As far as cigar continuity, I know from the cigar movie Blowing Smoke that it took an enormous amount of cigars to ensure that each scene was done properly. Director James Orr showed me the cigar bucket after he was done with the movie which literally overflowed.

Jadawin, I'm not sure when the movie is coming out. By the way, I think there was some kind of misunderstanding regarding the link to your photo album. Feel free to link to your photo album. Sorry about any inconvenience here.

Saulphx: I haven't had much time since the baby was born in October. When I get home she is more fun to play with than the computer.

Most of my acting was in Chicago theatre. Then I transitioned to extra work and industrial films. If you worked for Hartford Insurance or any Chicago union in the late '80s or early '90s, you would have seen me in your training films, I must have done 30, they paid the bills for a while.

You can see me as an extra in The Untouchables. Their continuity was off in the scene, so you see me twice in the shooting range scene in the police academy. I am the guy shooting the pistol next to Andy Garcia, then when they call him in to meet Connery and Costner I am the guy with my back to the camera, that sidesteps out of the way, when he enters the room.

It's actually a funny story. All of us extras were brought onto the set, then the stars came in later. Mr. Garcia was in his place at the same time that the extras were brought in and briefed on how and when to use the pistols. He and I were talking when they told us all to quiet down for the instructions. We all thought he was one of us, since no one had ever seen him before. (I thought the star of the scene was going to be the goofy Redheaded guy, since I knew him from Second City) They put me next to Mr. Garcia on the shooting line, because I was the biggest guy in the room and it would make him look even more menacing.

Since my arms are so long, on my last shot, when the camera passed me, I had to draw the pistol back (like it was recoil) so I wouldn't hit the camera with the pistol. I didn't have any lines, but they cut out where he shot a smiley face in the target, gives me a look and I standing there with my mouth open in awe.... Oh well, I could have been famous.

The truth is, Andy Garcia is the nicest "Star" I've ever met. He's quiet and down-to-earth, just like you see him in interviews. I wish I had been into cigars and knew Spanish, back then, so we could have had more to talk about than shooting blanks out of pistols. Which, by the way, caused huge chunks of the old building's ceiling to rain down on everyone.

I agree that babies are much more fun than computers!

Thanks for telling us more about yourself, interesting story. I guess you decided not to become famous. Hope your decision to do whatever you do now was a good one.

If you ever get the opportunity to promotional work with cigars, jump at the chance, it is a lot of fun. A mate and I spent 2 days doing a promotional video for a hotel group. They said that we wont get paid but we can smoke & drink whatever we like. We had a wonderful couple of days on camera, smoking great cigars and chatting about the Cape Town cigar scene. The entire shoot took 2 weeks, we were on for 5 minutes in a 30 minute show. Oh, the sacrifices we make to spread the word!!
