So they didn't like you swearing, eh James?

Consider this -- we can't cuss on the boards. Why? Because it reflects poorly on the magazine and the site. Does this logic sound familiar?

I'm not saying it's your idea to censor certain words on the boards. What I am saying is that the same logic that keeps us from typing "****" is the same logic used by the dude from Craft.

So I would hesitate to chalk it up merely to American prudery. If you look around, you find it in places you wouldn't expect.

I can curse with the best of them James and I don't consider myself a prude but if I had been seated next to you and my wife had heard the f-word 14 times you better believe you and I would have had a few words. Your argument about Free Speach doesn't hold water. You're profane language in public is the same as screaming "FIRE" in a crowded theater, it is not acceptable.
Respectfully I advise saving that language for the golf course.

This is silly, if the couple was so upset, they should have said something after the first time, not waited till the end, and make a big deal out of it.

People are way too uptight nowadays. He has the right to swear, you have the right not to listen to it, other than that, all you can do is ask for a comprimise.

I dunno, I'm starting to ramble, **** this.

I am not the first to suggest there are appropriate and inappropriate places for all kinds of human activities. Few of us think showering in the nude objectionable, unless maybe you do it in your front yard. By the same token, soldiers muttering profanities on a battlefield in the middle of a war is a far cry from muttering a host of four-letter words at a restaurant where nearby guests will clearly be offended. The latter is a step beyond rude. It could be akin to spitting on the food.

Is it a Titleist?

I was VERY surprised at the article...I kept waiting to read that the man was hearing someone besides James Suckling or something else...not that James was actually using that lanquage where others could hear. I'm surprised because I assumed that a long-time CA representative would act in such a class-less manner (actually not class-less, just low-class). I think people who are "loud-talkers" as Seinfeld might say, are inconsiderate idiots....shame, shame, shame, you are wrong on this one James. Show a little more class...I hate to say that my opinion of Mr. Suckling has been lowered by this. Remember, It takes a long time to build a good reputation, and only a moment to lose it. It's not a issue of freedom in this case, its an issue of class!!!

One has to realize that public behavior is what it is. You dress a certain way because you want to make an impression on those who see you. Well, the language you use is part of your public persona. If James had been using a bunch of crazy sounding chemistry jargon, he would have been noticed but for a different reason.

I was picking up my wife's car at a local car dealership one day. As I was waiting in line, the guy in line ahead of me was going off about some repairs he had to pay for because his warranty had expired. A salesperson was with him, nodding and trying to make it through the guy's rant. You've been in this situation before -- some guy is making an *** of himself, people are looking around nervously, hoping he shuts up, lots of discomfort. Anyway, the guy says a cuss word and that sets the salesperson OFF. The salesguy says, "you can say anything you want, but you're going to watch your mouth." Funny how he put up with all this guy's blather until he swore -- that was where the line was.

I don't talk like a sailor when I'm in public. Some people are offended by it, and I try not to be an offensive person when I'm in public. It's the same reason I take a shower in the morning and cut my hair once a month. I don't wear t-shirts that make radical political statements, either. But that's me. Not everyone responds to language and symbols in the same way, and not everyone gives off the same impression.

You have the right not to listen when you are talking about radio and tv, but you don't have the ability to turn your ears off in the middle of a restaurant.

Not having read the article I'm basing my opinions based on the drift of what I'm reading here.......

To me it sounds more like a total lack of manners rather than any sort of argument defending ones personal freedoms.....

Damn Cori, you must save all your non-sense for the other boards because on this one, I couldn't agree with you more.

It all comes down to being mindful of your surroundings and the company you're with. Its called having proper manners. Being in a puplic restaurant is different than sitting at your favorite watering hole with the guys. Evidently James doesn't understand the difference.

What I find really too funny is, they posted an article to tell us of James ordeal. I guess they're saving the cigar related info for their magazine.

I have plenty of nonsense for everyone, lol.

Yeah, I wonder why James related the story to us. He made a weak argument that being able to cuss in public is akin to being able to smoke in public, but I don't think anyone buys that.

Maybe this is a confessional report from James. He is feeling guilty and he wants to know if he should be or not.

It's funny how language paints a picture of the person you are hearing. Location and language paints another picture of the same person.

If you are with buddies in a pub, so speak one way and everyone there speaks the same, so no one around you is offended.

If you are at a restaurant with your spouse and friends, you speak another way polite and sincere and you expect other around you to speak the same way.

If you are at a gathering where you represent the company you work for, you speak a different way, more formal and professional because you are the image of your company that everyone will associate the company with.

In all these situation someone will be the referee, usually the owner of the establishment or the host of the event. Why? Because they set the tone for how they want their interests to be perceived.

IMO, swearing presents an image of lack of intelligence, a person not clever enough to use a more appropriate word. Triple that, for the written word.

ConfusedIs that the image you want to leave people with? Confused

Ah, who am I trying to impress. I agree with stogemiester and RyJ. Wink

I'm surprised that James would brag about such boorish behavior. I suppose the other guests had no rights worth respecting.

It made me wonder if he enjoys cigars or the displeasure they sometimes invite. You know, James, sword-swallowing draws plenty of stares: the dinner crowd might enjoy that stunt, too.

As I said in the Cigar Talk thread; he sounds like an arrogant prick. Thank God, he didn't tell the guy he worked for CA. Not the type of person and behavior I want representing me as a cigar lover. It's a hell of a thing to get upset about after you admit to having a "good amount of wine" and "jolly and buddyish" (read loud and annoying).

I just went to the same restaurant (Craft) two nights ago. It is not the type of place to throw the F-bomb around within earshot of others. Maybe you can pull that at McSorley's, but not Craft. Its not my normal hang-out - very, very swanky place.

Quit trying to act the tough-guy James and admit that you goofed.

Mc Sorley's? You could shout the f-word at the top of your lungs in that place and nobody would flinch. In fact they'd probably buy you a round. I know it is steeped in history and all, but man that place is a dive.

As for Suckling's behavior, I am assuming this is a fairly adult crowd and it was after hours, so if there were no kids in earshot the move is to just ignore it.

There is usually enough backround noise or chatter at these places to drown out anything you DON'T want to hear. I think this guy was trying to listen in on Suckling's conversation.

In an age where people PAY for the privilege of receiving uncensored movies and information (HBO, Showtime, Playboy Channel...) I can't believe that there are still people who get offended so easily.

On the flip side if it was a family place at 6pm and I had children at the table, I would have gotten up and reminded Mr. Suckling of where he was after the first utterance of the f-bomb.
