Old Henry may be a stupid-sounding brand name with equally goofy artwork, but it's made by Don Pepin Garcia in his new Nicaraguan factory. It seems to be a Holt's house brand. I got a couple of torpedos courtesy of (former) CigarAficionado.com member, AshtonVSG (who was kicked off by his fourth of fifth post). Retail is around $6.
http://www.holts.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/SpecialDisplay?special_rn=175617Great looking stick with typically flawless DPG construction. Dark, almost reddish wrapper with more of a matte texture than oily. The pre-light aroma was nice, not especially compelling but nothing indicated the cigar was too young to smoke. Draw was a little tight but the burn was near-perfect for the first half, which was lighter in body than DPG blue label but still nice and thick, flavor-wise. It's leathery and a bit woody, and takes on some notes of cinnamon as it burns.
Unfortunately, at the midway point, the cigar took a turn. The flavor started to get a little thin, the cinnamon notes became too prominent, and a slightly metallic aftertaste dominated. I tossed it at the 1/3rd mark. So did AshtonVSG, for the same reasons.
Having only smoked the torp, I can't say how the other sizes measure up or if these issues relate just to this one facing.
For $6, the Old Henry doesn't quite make it. For another buck, I can go with the DPG blue label.
